Simply we should add his abilty of vaporising enemies blood and not just as suicude attack and the reason is simple since August has no original magic (except for that one) and no magic was used against him in that moment it means the pillar of heat he created against Natsu,Mest,Lucy and happy was his original magic that vaporises blood that simple didn't work cause Natsu neutralised a part of it and because Irene's spell teleported them away.
