All Purpose Dragon Ball Thread

Might be wrong on this but I believe the obsession with canon in Western fandoms stems from Star Wars. Where they have six defined levels of canon to keep track of different continuities. The irony is that many Western franchises (like DC Comics or Marvel Comics for example) don't even subscribe to that idea, they just treat different continuities as different timelines or universes from the mainline comics. So why manga is expected to adhere to some sort of specific canon 'rule' is beyond me.
It's way older than that, the real obsession has religious roots with Christianity and what is or isn't considered canonical

I'm talking about sweaty internet nerds raging out over delusional headcanons. It's true it has roots in Christianity but I hold the impression that the obsession in fandoms with multimedia franchises and canon comes from Star Wars.

From what I can conclude with Toyotaro's and Torishima's statement (both about himself and Toriyama) is there may simply be no strict canon or continuity when it comes to Dragon Ball. It seems to be far looser than we would've previously thought. This may as well just be them saying "No one cares, make up your own canon"

Speaking as someone who is a Western Dragon Ball fan (worse, an American fan): I've never really given much of a shit about what is canon and non canon in Dragon Ball. I mean it's Dragon Ball at the end of the day regardless if it's from a manga, anime, movie, video game, etc.

Hell, I would say that shit like Heroes and Xenoverse try to fit all these DB media together and say they exist in the same multiverse so I think that the folks behind Dragon Ball media view canon as a umbrella term that anything could be fit under.

Your probably the type of a tiny minority

Alright I got a question for anyone on this thread that's interested in discussing it: what's the first Dragon Ball movie that you can ever recall watching and how do you think it holds up currently?

For me, I can't recall specifically which movie it was but I think I remember it being Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan, which I think holds up pretty well despite DBS Broly being a thing. Super Broly is arguably a better written character, but Z Broly is a lot more menacing and intimidating as a monster and all around villain.

That tells me you've never been to Japan nor have you worked there, I have. Let me assure you right now that they're some of the most insufferable people on the planet. Heck, this whole Shueisha bullshit right now? This is precisely because of a bunch of Japanese boomers being the most insufferable people on the planet. I guarantee this wouldn't happen if Dragon Ball was an American franchise.

Right, but as an ethnic Japanese who grew in Malaysia for most of his life till today, I can assure our cultures are miles apart from the Western mindset, there are a lot of cultural issues....altho, unlike the West, we may criticize the works but we respect authors.....stablishing your headcanons in spite of what the author says, even if there are inconsistencies chronologically-wise, it's plain disrespectful. In the west there are plenty of cases of fans sending death threats to writers/authors on social media or physically assaulting/harassing them in public.

In regards you hating us, Japanese, it's fine, you are in ur own right to dislike Japanese culture becouse I admit, it has lots of bad aspects....., but mind you, you consume all of our media frequently, I'm sure you enjoy anime and the stuff...

Canonicity may be discussed in Eastern forums at times, yeah, but we are not vehemently obssesed with it.

We will never say "oh Dragon Ball GT doesn't exist or is invalid becouse Toriyama wasn't involved". We just count it as an alternate timeline, the value of a series isn't determined as wherether it fits into the main continuity or doesn't.....

In Japan Daima was a success, much more than DBS, however in the Western hemisphere fans seem to hate it becouse it's not linked to Super or that all the main characters were turned into children, funnily enough this is Toriyama's style and this is the first time he was heavily involved in a series, much more than Dragon Ball Super....

Peak just dropped

It was so beautiful seeing that livestream... genuinely such a peak reveal and honestly one of the hypest Part 3's for a Legends Anniversary ever 🥹.

Also, maaan, y'all DBH fans are leaching off of Legends yet don't show it any love 😭.

I heard that Toyotaro said in an interview that everything in DB is canon. If that is actually true that means even DBH is canon 😂

Oh boy, another one of those days.
This...wouldn't even downgrade the verse from Low 1-C...what?
