I know that by the end of MK11 they went to the Great Kung Lao Era, so maybe they're gonna have it be around that time.

I mean it's probably because the MK fandom being permanently divided thanks to controversial decisions in the second timeline which includes:
*Sindel always being an evil gold digging thot that was intentionally abusive to Kitana.
*Shao Khan getting beaten easily by Kitana in MK11 and in general becoming another brute badguy rather than a godlike manipulative mastermind with clout (the DLC rectifies this somewhat but the damage had already been done).
*A nasty bug lady killing off fan favourite characters including OGs such as Baraka and Scorpion (redeemed human).
*Reptile and Ermac becoming henchman fodder despite being the 3rd and 4th most iconic MK ninjas (behind Scorpion and Sub-zero) plus Smoke getting left after MK9.
And that's just story issues, gameplay is an entirely different can of worms but the "variations" are quite divisive last I checked.
Who knows what will happen but I hear guest characters in Netherrealm games have become quite polarizing these days

Guts is one of those memetic badass types that people don't think, but want to be invincible at any cost for all his badassery but also one of the better regarded manga characters of all time (boosted by Kentaro Miura passing away not so long ago). Kirito may be one of the most controversial characters in anime (he does have many fans, but just as many haters, even in the SAO fandom). Yeah, if Guts lost it would be an spectacle on the league of Supes vs Goky, and Green Lantern vs Ben.

Yeah, i like RF vs Black, I think that the next one instead of Godspeed vs Garou should be Jay Garrick vs All might, keep in mind that Jay is the slowest Speedster and he is not one of those guys that constantly moves at the speed of light or higher

Well, the DBX came before Cloud vs Link 2, so all non-vs nerds viewers had Cloud as Wall level. I mean it wasn't until like a couple of years ago that people stopped taking all material from Advent Children clips on youtube and actually bothered to look at the original friggin game.
And Cloud is also quite divisive.
If you ask me, Guts losing at all is gonna cause a shitstorm. He's one of those characters people put on a pedestal due to how badass he is, sometimes even disregarding the things that actually makes Guts such a compelling character (like not taking crap from enemies much stronger than him in a world where, despite being very strong, he's still far from the top)
