Why is the site suddenly so badly optimised?

I have recently noticed the that site hogs tons of memory on devices. PC or mobile. I have never seen usage of a single tab of the forrum use anything below 500mb, it's usually around 1 GB per tab. At the time of writing this post my tab had usage of 1.3 GB RAM. Say nothing of even the processor spike that browser takes when openning this site.

My old android phone completely hangs everytime i open this site. It has 3GBs RAM, so imagine the load it takes running this site.

I don't know about my PC. But it's always a pain to use the site on my cell phone. I can't even leave the automatic translation turned on, otherwise the whole site will crash and the only solution is to close the tab and create a new one.

Same here, though just for Mobile. Occasionally the site just... stops. Like, no scrolling would work, neither would any function, and the site seems to be refreshing but it takes quite a while.

One of the reasons I stopped using this place was because it is impossible for me to navigate through my phone without the site making the app crash. It's been certainly bothersome.

With performance hurdles like this, regular users will be less invested in working on this site, let alone browsing, say nothing of external visitors just getting frustrated and leaving.

Can't have such atrocious website in 2025, what techstack was used for creation and maintainace of this site?

That said, the forum was fine for me on mobile when I use firefox or Flex browsers, compared to chrome. So, there's that. At this point I feel like I'm an advertiser trying to get people to other browsers.

True, this only happens when I use chrome instead of my adblocker browser one.

I also have similar problem with the fandom one though, the bolded text literally on both browsers don't seem like they're bolded at all but it's something that's "light" instead, fixed this when I turned the browser into desktop mode but doing this everytime sucks ngl

Apparently using a ad blocking VPN also helps optimising the site, RAM usage per tab is less than 400 now. Hope that remains the case, would have loved less than 100 or atleast <200 ideally.

Here is what our system manager answered:

"Our site is super fast now. The reasons we are facing this issue are -

1) Our page content is too big. Usually, XenForo suggests a maximum of 20 posts per page with medium and small size replies, where we have 40 posts, and most of them are big replies. This takes a lot of memory.

2) We have an ad system with a 30-second reload setup, which keeps taking memory. Since our page content is big, it takes time to read and reply to them, which causes multiple ad rotations and ends up taking a lot of memory.

3) We have a video ad setup that takes like half of the memory and keeps bidding till it finds suitable ads. I personally think this is the real culprit, and we should remove video ads entirely for logged-in users. Let me know your thoughts, and I can then chat with our advertisement provider."

We decided to ask about removing our video advertisements for logged in members (point 3). 🙏

I will ask again. 🙏

Not related to this site.

But damn, what happened to the Fandom?

My whole computer crashes after opening the Fandom, like, it really crashes. I can't even close tabs or navigate.

Does anyone know if the Fandom Wiki changed the ad system? Because using AD Block makes it go back to normal and I can use the site normally, but with ads? I think GTA VI would run better.

That never happens to me with the Fandom, even without using adblock. Can you try using a VPN (without ad block), and try to check the Fandom while on? Could be that the ADs in your area are just, really awful. Otherwise, probably a problem with your device at that point.

Wouldn't 20 posts per page solve this? Because this issue happens with me too here.

That would make our forum threads even harder to overview and navigate than currently, and is very unlikely to be a major cause of these problems.

However, I have been told that the video advertisements have been turned off for logged in members now, and they likely caused most of the problems. 🙏
