The purpose of brackets in profile names

I thought that profiles with bracketed () text in them have it to distinguish that character from its other versions that have profiles or from characters from other verses with the same exact name, but I have seen plenty of characters that have brackets in them that are not either of the two. Some examples:

Orochimaru (Naruto)
Tsunade (Naruto)
Jiraiya (Naruto)
Nagato (Pain)
Chris Jericho (WWE) and almost all other wrestling characters

What's the purpuse of brackets on these profile names?
