Sonic General Discussion Zone Act 1: New Frontiers

Sonic Question Time:
What is your least favorite pairing in the Sonic series? Alternatively, what's your favorite? This can be for any part of the Sonic franchise (Games, Movies, Archie, Fleetway, etc.) Bonus points to those who have an unusual/uncommon pairing.
  • It can be either romantic or platonic, hence the word pairing. Sonic and Tails would be an example of a platonic pairing, or Surge and Kit.
In terms of platonic pairings, my favorite would have to be Tails + Amy. They hold this big sister and little brother dynamic that doesn't really get much time to shine.

Least favorite ships of all time is Sonic/Tails and Shadow/Maria. Just... f*ck no.
One of my favorite pairings are Shadow and Rouge, even without the romantic pairing potential, though especially because of it. Shadouge got the highest shipping potential out of any Sonic ship, and it's also one of the likeliest to become canon (low bar cuz you should not count on it)

Disclaimer: Shadouge tangent
I once saw a post on the Sonic subreddit called "reasons why you ship", and it listed so many more reasons for Shadow x Rouge that OP had to end it with "blah blah blah" to prevent it from being too long, while other ships had significantly shorter lists of reasons. Reading that, I felt so validated

I do not understand why the headcanon that they have a "sibling dynamic" became so popular. Yeah, they have a bare minimum platonic relationship as per Sonic characters, but Rouge has expressed attraction toward Shadow too many times for it to lean toward supposed "sibling dynamic" territory. Plus, I'm fairly certain that term is mostly used in fandoms to discredit a ship. No two characters have a sibling dynamic unless something official actually affirms that, such as WoG or said characters expressing it themselves

Shadow and Maria were inspired by a romantic couple.

Huh. You live and learn.

Lowkey sometimes I am hating on Sonic, but other times whenever I see the Sonic franchise do something cool (Like when seeing clips of the Sonic 3 movie) I feel like a sleeper agent code activates something inside of me and I instantly turn back into a Sonic fan. It's in my nature.

It's the real fan inside you battling against your non-fan exterior.

Least favorite ships are anything that's illegal, essential 'cest, or Sonadow. Whispangle is one that I dislike in recent times due to it having some real Archieisms.

Favorite ships are Shadow/Amy, Shadow/Rouge, Sonic/Amy, and a rare one being Shadow/Tikal. I have others, but those are the ones I can list off the top of my head. May explain more on the way to work.

I like Shadow/Amy because of how well they bounce off of each other when they're interacting. They're just a joy to see and they have great chemistry. I never liked the whole "isn't Shadow 50+ years old" when he was like put on ice for those years. Dreadful argument. Either way, they're amazing and the fuel we've been getting for it is cute.

I will say that I DO dislike the old Shadow/Amy fandom since they got away with a lot of WEIRD stuff and mischaracterized both of them.

CRAZY!

I never knew this!
User posting the same gems I got redpilled on with Shadow and Maria. But yeah, their relationship is confirmed to not really have an overly explicit label since Maekawa has left stuff up to interpretation. But there's absolutely been romantic undertones to the dynamics portrayal in media, and in how it was conceived. So yeah, I find it valid to ship, and it's one I really like in hindsight. It's not "incest" or anything, it's more like Vincent and Lucrecia in Final Fantasy VII. Or Cloud and Tifa for the childhood friend dynamic that was going on.

Eh, I hardly find the relationship between Shadow and Maria anything other than pure friendship. Usually it's portrayed as such and makes much more sense for it to be. Unsure how valid the ship is due to the context of their bond. Feel like a Sonic and Tails bond in a sense.

In its purest form, it's friendship. It doesn't need an exact label, but romantic undertones are definitely in Maekawa's vision to some degree. So it's valid to ship in my eyes. Especially when Sonic X and other media have "Bishie Sparkle" which is a trope in Japan to show romantic interest in someone. Thus, Shadaria has a greater Japanese following.

To add on Cosmo also gets this when Tails is crushing on her or when the Chaotix are planning to put them together.

zoophilia aside, is Maria X Shadow immoral? I am pretty sure that at the time, Shadow scaled to Maria's age, right? There's not really a big age difference, if I remember well.

I hate Nically so much. By far the worst ship.

Don’t care for Knuckles and Rouge.

I hate Silvaze.

Some continuities I hate SonAmy but others is fine.

My all time favorite pairing is SonAlly in all continuities involving Sally (please don’t put Sally into the Main Continuity).

SonAze is very nice.

SonOuge I do like.

ShadAmy is very nice.

In terms of Shadamy, I'm under the assumption a quarter of the fans just wanna see Sonic get cucked.
Nah. It’s more because SonOuge or SonAze exists for them. That’s the way I see it.
Sonic and Blaze, eh? Not unheard of, I dont mind the ship myself and I think it could work (at the expense of Amy fans).
Yeah. There are other continuities that do recognize SonAmy (X and Boom) which I’m all for there.

I actually like Shadamy but it's not my favorite Shadow ship of the two I actually do so after enjoying Shadamy art that I idly scroll past in the wild I'm like

Favorite Ship? Hm. I think my favorite is Scourge and Surge because it’s everything good about Joker and Harley turned to 11 because they both give as good as they get (they’re BOTH Joker and Harley). Also, I’ve explained pretty clearly the immense narrative potential the two have together.

If it was to be a ship that can potentially work, I think Rouge is actually the best partner for Sonic. Mostly as a “no strings attached” (there are MANY strings attached) scenario, because both live solitary nomadic lifestyles chasing their thrills. Every interaction they have in canon is literally flirting (though non-seriously), and they act as perfect counterpart foils. (Thrills at the cost of no one/self versus thrills at the cost of others. Cares about everyone freely, recklessly charges in without care for the self versus cares about the self freely, reluctantly charges in for others. Speed on the ground versus speed in the sky. Battles openly and is the strong tide of battle versus someone battles secretly, the weak but powerful tide. Etc. Etc.) But to be honest, the neat thing about Sonic is he kind of bounces off of every cast member in a way you can easily justify their pairing. I just prefer Sonic and Rouge because it’s a mutual slowing down or speeding up type of dynamic that made Sonic and Sally so interesting. (Though in their case each of them only represented half—Sonic slowed down and Sally sped up—To make the whole, whereas Sonic and Rouge would have to do either or together.)

Least favorite? Uhhhhh. I don’t really have one outside of ships like Sonic/Tails, because those two are brothers.

EDIT: I also like the idea of Metal Sonic and Amy. Specifically Metal Sonic inexplicably cares for her romantically (because he has to as the One True Sonic), and wrestles with what that means, and Amy is more intent on reforming him through that vulnerability, ending in a powerful (mutual) platonic friendship.

Sonic and Rouge is funny to me because it's basically like Lupin and Fujiko. But only me and a certain Jigen fanboy will get that one. Either way, I like Sonouge alright.

I really like this a lot. Great points you brought up here.

Good break down here.

Scourge and Surge is basically a form of evil Sonamy. Since Surge is Evil Sonic, and Surge is Evil Amy (a form of Girl Sonic). Hell, Surge was confirmed to have been made in mind with Amy so tying it together like this makes sense.

Gave some feelings on Sonic and Rouge, but the dynamic reminds me of a typical cocky action hero with a femme fetal love interest. Like I said, Lupin and Fujiko is the dynamic I most immediately compare it to. But you can probably link it to many a James Bond relationship too.

Whoops, I accidentally pressed the reply button too soon

For these reasons I actually find Sonic/Rouge much more compelling as a platonic thing. Though even then it’s still probably like a top 10, maybe even top 5 Sonic ship for me so it’s valid all the same.

Scourge and Surge are like Scourge and Fiona if it was good.

I like when people bring this ship up because it is literally like one of the least-expected ships that isn't a crack ship imo. Your take of the NSA approach was fascinating to think on, considering it's a more... unorthodox... approach to romance.
