The iconic characters category says to keep it exclusive, as if just anyone is let in then it loses it's meaning. So I'm making this thread first for approval.

I think that Doomguy deserves this description.

Consider the wide reaching impact of his media. Doom codified the first person shooter genre, popularizing it among general consumers and spawning countless imitators. Hell, at one point FPSes would more commonly be referred to as "Doom Clones", and I don't think any other characters in this category can say they had an entire genre to their name. Doom is also really well known for heing able to be ported onto basically anything from ATMs to calculators to cars, which adds a further degree of recognizability. Hell, even in modern times, the announcements of doom 2016 and eternal generated quite a stir, and keep the doomguy a recognizable figure in modern media. As such, I think this would be an appropriate category to add to the profile.

Yes, I agree. He is the one who started the FPS genre alongside Blazkowicz and James Bond. Being iconic in video game fandom is an understatement, he was even ported twice by Nintendo, the company notorious for being family friendly even though DOOM is rated Z game. He's like Kratos, you know his name if you delve into the media even if only little time.

I AGREE

Also, Ezio and Altair should be there too, since they popularized Assassin's Creed and whatnot. Made the entire series' lore made famous worldwide too.

Honestly the idea of "Iconic Characters" itself seems really hard to get down to an exact science of when exactly something crosses the threshold into being "iconic", so I suppose I'm true neutral, on this.
Yes, the requirement says:

"Characters that are among the absolutely most extremely well-known, and easily recognizable icons to mainstream audiences in the world, with established long-lasting appeal."

As such, I prefer to only allow ridiculously popular and well-known characters that have endured over time.

I am not sure if Doomguy is enough of an icon to qualify. If you put him on a billboard, I doubt that a large part of the viewers would know who he is, much less his characteristic personality traits, if he has any.

Without Doomguy, the FPS scene would not even exist, so one must also take into account the amount of influence one has had on the whole world as a result. We should look for objective reasons too, not just rely on subjective reasons. Some people would not even recognize who Superman even is, even tho it's miniscule, but the effect he has had on the world is irrefutable.

Altair and Ezio are easily recognizable (A lot of people can easily recognize these two by Altair's missing ring finger and Ezio's italian hooded attire and hookblade). They literally brought the Assassins and the term itself back to the spotlight. So are Connor, Haytham Kenway and Edward Kenway because of their games respectively. But that's about it.

Without these five guys, AC would never receive the type of fame or backlash it receives now. Everywhere on the internet you see people shout out "AC died with Ezio and Desmond's death". It's a common occurence nowadays.

Hmmmmm, honestly, this makes me question what we've been ignoring with the term "iconic" here.

I suppose that Doomguy might qualify then, but I don't think that we should use this as a precedent to lessen our standards/requirements for the category.

Not at all, Ant. It won't lessen our standards. But rather it'll add something extra.

Also, I believe the other characters I mentioned would qualify as well.

No, they would not. Sorry.

If we accepted the niche Assassin's Creed characters, it would easily lead to accepting any rather popular video game, manga, or comicbook character to be added.

Please understand that this category is largely there for introductions to the wiki purposes, so new visitors get interested and can easily find characters that almost anybody can recognise.

AC sold a hundred million copies. It's not a niche franchise.

But very well. As you wish.

Ok then. Guess I'll add the category to him and close the thread then.

@KLOL

AC is recognizable but I would attribute that to the hood. Most people wouldn't know the names of the MCs aside from maybe Ezio and even that is iffy.

You can't close the thread. Only mods and admins can. Ant will take care of it.

EDIT: NVM I checked

I am a mod, lol. Brown names, green names, and purple names can close threads.
