Specifically, how does one go about differentiating them?

Purely as an example, someone used their hax on you, while you were taking a step. Because of the hax, instead of moving one step forward as you expected, you're now on a different continent. As far as I know, this can both be space hax and causality hax.

How would one be able to tell?

That's very broad, and case by case. You need context for things like these. At face value, this would probably be some form of Teleportation most likely, or maybe some form of Spatial Manipulation.
