I do not get the hype. The protagonist is unlikeable and fairly unintelligent. I mean do you really need to die 4 times to work out the correct strategy? And considering he's an otaku you would think he would be a bit more genre savvy, but no, he barely understands things most anime watchers would see the moment there's a single hint. Emilia is an incredibly bland love interest with no real reason for Subaru's love for her. And absolutely nothing is revealed or added to the story in the first season. It's literally a prologue, which better animes done better in 2 episodes, not 25.
Rem is still best girl though
