Anime Recommendation Dump: Cultural Wasteland Edition

Everytime I look at Death Note in S Tier, it confuses me. I'm trying to recommend things that you'd like based on what you tell me but it's also clear you enjoy mid shows. Maybe I should change my suggestions to other things which are horribly paced like Death Note is.

Hop off peak note.

I'm free to discuss the quality of Death Note somewhere suitable. First 10 episodes are peak fiction, Light loses his memory of the Death Note, then it all goes to shit. It does get a little better after a certain point but nothing S Tier worthy.

If all 37 (I think it's 37) episodes of Death Note were as good as the first 10, I'd have it as the best anime of all time and would recommend it to everyone but it's not and I'm tired of people pretending L's Death is what made the story unappealing when it dropped off in quality far before that.

I saw they were already recommended, but Monster and Steins;Gate are both pretty good. Also, Berserk seems like it might line up with your tastes.

This is bait.

I recommend considering watching Assassination Classroom. Show about a yellow octopus biological experiment threatening to blow up the entire planet while he teaches a class of middle schoolers who are tasked with killing him within a year so he doesn't blow up the planet.

A bit tropey which i know you arent really into, but I think the lessons the show teaches and the characters makes up for it. Very fleshed out cast of characters, which is surprising since it's a classroom so there's nearly 30 characters at any given time.

After thinking about it, I have decided to make "March Comes In Like A Lion" my official nomination. I like Hyouka but I'm gonna stick to this one.

March Comes In Like A Lion is passionate, visually stunning tale about the struggles and growth of Rei Kiriyama, a 17 year old shogi prodigy. Tormented by his difficult past of battling loneliness and depression, Rei makes his best attempt to navigate through the pressures of being a professional shogi player and building meaningful lasting bonds after dealing with isolation in his younger years.

My favorite parts of the story

Introspection: The story often has one reflect on life and its intricacies, and it helped me to find myself in a time where I was still finding out what I was. Hell I still am, and to this day this story helps me find my way on my journey.

Visuals: I know you said you personally don't care for animation but my god is the art stunning. The color palette, the style, this anime easily has some of the best animation I've ever seen.

Intro and Outro: Simply put they are beautiful. Some of the only intros and outros I have no problem listening to every time.

There is very strong competition among these recommendations so I think I'll be pleasantly surprised no matter the selection but I think this anime is something special so I hope I made a decently compelling case.

PS: As a chess player, the shogi still kinda confused me at times so 🤷🏽

I'll take this opportunity to recommend Love is War once again.

I think it's up your alley - it's a, genuinely, quite consistently funny show that doesn't rely so heavily on the tropes the genre is known for, and it has the best English dub I've ever watched for an anime. It's also not unusually long, being made up of 36 episodes and a movie. It's endearing and it's humorous, and I'd probably recommend it even to someone who doesn't usually watch anime. Give it a shot.

a tempting recommendation, and the opportunity exists to enrage Crab by not watching Devilman Crybaby again

Coming up with recommendations is pretty hard considering how stacked the current list is. Devilman Crybaby/Berserk are definitely up your valley based on limited knowledge of which verses you like, and it's basically impossible for most anime to top Steins;Gate, so I'll second both options like everyone else.

I'm so certain at this point that I'll love at least two of those, yeah. Seem fantastic.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (Saiki Kusuo No Psi-Nan)

Absolutely goated comedy anime, makes fun of the cliches that I think you dislike such as perverted protagonists. It has almost no combat since the main character is basically a god compared to the slice of life verse, anyways I just really liked it and maybe you will do too. Also a rare anime where the dub is actually better than sub, due to how hilarious the voice acting is

Its 48+6 episodes. Sadly, Season 2 is not dubbed only Season 1 is. You can watch it on Netflix if you have it. It also has a short sequal called "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened"

8.3/10 on IMDb

Vouching for this, I recommended something else yes, but this is also a fantastic suggestion

I'll have you know, I actually quite enjoy Love Is War. It's one of my favorite romance stories.

That being said, to remain at least somewhat in the spirit of the man who will break you over his knee for minor inconveniences, I will say I don't think the show is much to your style. It twists and distorts anime tropes and has extremely little degenerate bullshit, but even still, I think it's a bit too standard-y for you, and a bit too much sugar for your palette.

A change of pace might be nice, providing that it is not guilty of the standard anime sins. It sounds nice.

A line up of Steins Gate, Berserk, Serial Experiments Lain, Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby and Monster might lose to a romance anime 😳

Lowkey I'm here for it if there's people backing it this much.

if this actually qualifies then i definetely recommend love is war, its my go to recommendation for non anime watchers too (alongside death note)

Love is War is genuinely one of the shows I loved watching; its comedy was genuinely good when they got to it.
Although... yeah, probably doesn't matter since it's about anime reccs.
