Anime Recommendation Dump: Cultural Wasteland Edition

💀💀Bruh is being irrational with me. I recommended an anime that lacks everything he doesn't like. It's a revenge anime with a good plot and all.

If that's the case, I recommend '100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You' to any true degenerate weeb here. Our MC is going to get 100 girls. It is peak in every way, and all the girls are important to the story. We are getting season 2 this month, and for now, in the manga, the MC only has 31 girls in the harem on chapter 201. It's still ongoing.
things like this are only possible in a harem and are so fun

Stop giving recommendations

How about Dorohedoro
Armor has shown me the art style of the artist, and I will say, it's like. The second best I've seen, for a manga writer (obviously behind Berserk). It ******* rules. The anime itself seems odd (being fair, I watched the trailer and nothing more) so I'm on the fence. It doesn't look like it maintains the crazy ******* art from the manga. If I don't watch it, I am still glad to have seen the work of the original artist, at the very least.

Hmm, i don't know if you would like it

But uhh, Shangri-la Frontier? It's kinda new, the art was pretty good in the manga and my friend told me the Anime does not disappoint

in a totally different genre Monster
OH **** I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT ABOUT MONSTER! That’s another amazing one, very similar to Death Note in style and tone. Probably my 2nd recommendation behind Berserk. The only real issue with it in regards to this is that it’s around 70 episodes iirc; so a bit lengthy, but not outrageous or that far off of 50.

Question: does the recommendation have to be an episodic anime, or are anime movies also allowed to be recommended? Because I recently saw an OVA called Angel's Egg, and I wanted to see if I could drop it as a recommendation.

It was directed by a guy named Mamoru Oshii, who would go on to direct the 1995 film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, and the basic plot of Angel's Egg is that it takes place in a world set on top a massive sinking ship and centers around a girl, who is protecting an egg, bonding with a boy carrying a cross shaped rifle.

It's kind of a strange recommendation because Angel's Egg doesn't have much dialogue, and is very allegorical with themes based off the Bible. But it's visually one of the most beautiful pieces of Japanese media I've ever seen and, as a fan of something like the Cthulhu Mythos, it has this cosmic horror esque vibe and tone to it that resonated with me more than I thought it would. But if OVAs aren't allowed then just disregard this message.

Powerpuff Girls Z The Big O.
Just going to expand on this, because past the stupid bullshit it's a serious suggestion. The Big O is an anime centered around a character named Roger, a rich private investigator, who, with the help of his robot assistant Dorothy, uses his giant mecha Big O to solve various mysteries and problems throughout the city. The main draw of the show that'll keep you hooked is this tidbit:

No one knows whats outside the dome covering the aforementioned city, and no one has memories of anything beyond the last 40 years, apparently.

It shares a lot in common with Batman The Animated Series, which makes sense given of most of The Big O's staff had just come off animating that show.

I've also seen it compared to James Bond, which I'll refute, it's more like City Hunter, but instead of the Dorothy beating Roger with a hammer every time he does something perverted to a client or other character, you know classic anime trope, she reminds him, with the same deadpan voice, at every oppertunity, honestly even when he's not being perverted, that she's a robot and that her cold lifeless body despite her various attempts to do so, will seemingly, and tortuously, never understand why Roger acts the way he does. That last bit being something at times he himself can't even answer.

It's 25 Episodes, and despite being on streaming services, the license holders barely if at all use YouTube's copyright bots to full effect. It's not a particularly mainstream series anymore I guess despite Steve Blum dubbing the main character, and it being on [adult swim] back in the day.

I know the Shield Hero degeneracy. It was one of those verses we very nearly didn't allow on the wiki due to said degen shit.
That is the webnovel, not the light novel or anime. Those stuff were removed in them, and they are also 13+
  • Love Flops (Pepsiman25th)
Don't watch this. It has the stuff you don't like at its core: fan service, ecchi, etc. it has them on uncensored level.

I mentioned it last thread, so **** it: Fate/Zero.

As I said then, it avoids a LOT of the shit that is the fate standard, so to speak: It's not a confusing story, It doesn't show horniness to my knowledge, and instead just focuses on it's story and more than a little high-pace action. But unlike other series(HAZBIN HOTEL) it knows when to slow the **** down and just have character and story moments.

I would just watch an anime movie worth watching outside the context of my one-per-year rule. We did Akira for the VSBW Movie Night last year, shit was great. For the record, this sounds great too, and indeed Ghost in the Shell is one we've had on the radar for a long time. So, might watch it.

Did Pepsiman really recommend Bambu harem anime dawg.

Just as an FYI: I noticed that after I recommended Angel's Egg, you wrote in the OP that you would prefer a dub to a sub. And as far as I'm aware, Angel's Egg has no dub to begin with and only exists in a sub form.

Now I don't know if that would be a deal breaker for you, or if you're fine with sub but just prefer dub, but I thought I should inform you about it regardless just so you know what you're getting into.

I'll watch subbed things if they're worth it. Pan's Labyrinth kicks ass.

Quick, tier list of the animes you've watched!

I'm fairly certain you don't have to tell people what anime scraped the bottom of the barrel and then found another ******* barrel though!

I will suggest Hunter x Hunter (1999), while most people agree that the 2011 adaptation is the better version the 1999 version is also good and i believe that it's more appropriate for this thread (62 episodes + 8 OVAs vs 148 episodes, mainly because the 2011 version adapts more content from the manga). One thing I will point out to is that the 1999 show does contain filler with mixed opinions (still better rated than your average fillers).

Now the show itself while from a glance it might seem like your average generic shonen with common anime tropes in reality it is more than that and it does contain genuinely good character writing and well thought out fights and power system.

Also I will note that the 2011 show adapts the material of the 1999 show in 58 episodes so you might want to watch it instead if you dislike all filler and don't have a problem with not watching two thirds of a show (although I imagine the 1999 show would fit your taste better as it's a darker adaptation, in the end it's all up to you)

fma under hellsing is nasty work
FMA had moments of greatness that rivaled the S-tiers but had so much dragging it down, man. It delved too greedily in the standard anime crap. I think it does get a debuff for being Shonen.

Will say, of the ones here the strongest ones of the bunch are Steins Gate and Devilman Crybaby. I have a friend who really dislikes various common anime tropes, even ones that are somewhat present in Steins Gate, but the sheer writing of that story and it's primary characters turned it into one of their all times favorites series despite their dislike for some aspects or characters. It's one of those shows where it's a slow burn, but god when the flames start they are one of a kind.

Devilman Crybaby on the other hand is something that is just a given to recommend. One of a kind, unique style, thesis worthy themes and story, ect ect, you name it that show has it. Don't got as much to say on it however since it largely speaks on it's own terms and I have less personal experience experimenting with it with others like Steins Gate.

Castlevania is a close third, for similar reasons to Devilman.

Are the tiers chosen in respect to anime specifically or to media in general (like would Death Note and Eva be considered S-tier in relation to other media). Just curious since by looking at the rating one wouldn't assume you are an anime hater (although that might be because you choose the shows you watch very carefully).

Bambu, if you enjoyed Hellsing then I have another recommendation for you in the form of an anime called Drifters. It's made by the same guy who made Hellsing, Kouta Hirano, and the plot of the anime is that two god siblings summon historical figures from various points in human history to be apart of their "armies" and fight each other.

It's an isekai, but it doesn't have a lot of the tropes of the genre that bog down the story and characters and is around 13(15?) episodes in length. Not to mention that the animation is also pretty stellar, rivaling the animation of Hellsing Ultimate if I had to be honest.

Anime specifically. Broadly speaking the first two remain S-tiers outside the context of anime, everything else drops a peg (Overlord to B, Hellsing to C, etc). There's a pretty large gap between Death Note and Overlord in terms of enjoyment so I don't think I've watched an A-tier outside the context of anime.

I joke that I am an anime hater, but I don't think it's really very accurate. I dislike the Standard Form of anime. I think the writing tends to be bad and the storylines uninteresting and the characters one-dimensional. Without wanting to sound more egotistical than I am, so little of it has a ******* point. There is literally nothing interesting in Bleach, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I assume it's the same reason action films tend to be very bad but are still eaten up, in a non-anime context.

Hellsing was okay. I note the recommendation but I wouldn't consider Hellsing the score to beat, here. Even the other B-tier was considerably better than it.

Do got to ask, if Steins Gate does end up winning will that include Steins Gate 0? It's basically a sequel to the events that go down a pseudo 'What If' storyline which basically connects various dots the original leaves out. Due to the nature of Steins Gate as a series, it's still a 'canon' line of events and gives a lot of context to things that happen in the original's ending. This would basically turn it from a 1 season watch through to a 2 season one.

If the answer is yes, then I recommend the watch order of - Entire og Steins Gate season --> Open the Missing Link/ Divide by Zero (Also known as Episode 23β, which is a recreation of the same episode however halfway through the events play differently which directly lead to 0) --> Steins Gate 0 entire season. I'll leave the reasons for this vague as to avoid as many spoilers as possible, it's one of those things where 'Its obvious why once you get there'.

if I like it, yeah, probably. I tend to watch the adjacent media if I like the core thing (again, Neon Genesis Evangelion movies). So, sure.

Makes sense considering anime is a medium and not a genre. I don't think a medium can really be fully disliked.

btw you might have not noticed my recommendation.

Well we are here again. I would suggest Gate like last year but that seems to already have noise behind it. This year I have 2 recommendations for you to check out, March Comes in Like a Lion or Hyouka. Both are pretty well written in my opinion and generally my friends have liked it regardless of if it matched their normal tastes. ofc you could just give up and watch Peak Ball Z or One Peak.

Good luck, and I hope you find what you are looking for this year.

Bro we're on a site that is centered around indexing and debating fictional characters in make-believe scenarios. Age is the last thing you should be bringing to dissuade yourself from watching Peak Fiction.

I've already watched Mad God, not sure what you mean.

to be fair I caught a shitload of that when I was six/when my baby brother was six

Everytime I look at Death Note in S Tier, it confuses me. I'm trying to recommend things that you'd like based on what you tell me but it's also clear you enjoy mid shows. Maybe I should change my suggestions to other things which are horribly paced like Death Note is.
