Asian giant hornets, like European hornets and praying mantises, are among the insects that can kill mice. Asian giant hornets, however, are a greater threat than either, so let's pit it against another threat: rats! Yep. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrats! This battle will be full-on SBA because of course it would. Anyway, here are their profiles.:

Rats are a whole different beast to a mouse. They can be up to 3x larger, more vicious, and more intelligent. They would have the size advantage over the hornet, which needs to get close to the rat to sting it, which is its wincon.

I'll be honest, I'm leaning towards Inconclusive. The hornet can definitely get close enough to the rat to sting it, which would eventually one-shot the rat. But in doing that, the hornet allows the rat to grab it and bite it, which will kill it. The rat wins more than the hornet does in this situation, but I think the most likely result is that the rat kills the hornet and then dies from the poison.

That's a pretty fair assessment.

Rats have lower movement speed, but extremely high reaction speed, as they have been shown to dodge triggered snap traps. If we are going with the high end of both speeds, the hornet is about 2x faster than the rat, so the rat is perfectly capable of reacting.

No. Actually:
Length of rat trap: 7", diameter of arc.
That gives us 10.995" total arc.
27.9273cm/12ms = 23.3m/s, or 52 miles per hour

It's not too big of a gap either way, and afaik a 3x difference isn't enough to blitz, so i'd argue that it can react.

Wait, I think I had it wrong. It's 12ms for a mouse trap and 23 ms for a rat trap.

So the rat can barely react... which mean inconclusive is right. The numbers don't lie. It never needed it, but the inconclusive party can have my vote too for the record.

Folks, you can swat a hornet, can't you? Doesn't mean your speed is superhuman.

Not really. That just means our attacks have to cover more distance before reaching their destination. A rat's combat speed and reaction speed are on part with humans, it won't get blitzed, just outsped.
