Megami Tensei General Discussion Thread

Nothing substantial. I dont think side quests are anywhere on the timeline definetively unless they have a deadline like in Strikers, but it does grant 1-A(likely High 1-A) ratings post revision for that feat
Pretty sure it's recommended in the DLC description that the fight or subquest is left for the end of the game, so I was wondering about scaling for peeps like Matter Lucifer or the other Nahobino.

Also there's OST name spoilers that give away two potential bosses, so click at your own warning if you wanna answer that
Yeah so Masakados may be the new super boss for Vengeance, as well as potentially Satan for the actual final boss (Unless Matter Lucifer is kept)

So, uh, wanted to ask for a bit of advice. Never played a Megami Tensei or Persona game before, but been seriously considering jumping into the series for a while now. Would Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance be a good starting point?

SMT has no actual point A to B timeline, you can start at any game you wish. And SMT V is a good starting point, so go ahead.

Yeah, Vengeance would be a good starting point. But if you don't want to wait and want to jump right in, Nocturne is also a great starter game.
ERMMMM BUT NOCTURNE IS THE HARDESST SMT AND RPG EVER!!!! ITS TOO HARD!!!! NORMIES CANNOTPLAY IT!!!!! /j

Alright, sweet! Getting lost on continuous stories is something that really bugs me, so great to know SMT games are more standalone. I don't really mind getting my ass kicked by the difficulty, it's part of the learning experience. I've also heard great stuff from Nocturne, but I think I'll wait a bit for Vengeance, since it's not far away, and use that time to finish some stuff I'm playing right now.

The only SMT games that are full on connected are IV and Apocalypse. And so are I and II but I feel like you can hop into II right away without playing I.

Yeah, that would likely be a good starting point. Persona is the best starting point, just because there are simply more games on more platforms. If you’re comfortable waiting, P5R usually goes on sale for no less than 20 bucks, and P4G is constantly 20 dollars. If you’re willing to spend the 60 outright, then I’d absolutely say go for Royal, or simply wait for Vengeance. There’s also SMT III for 50 dollars.

Hope this helps.

Gotcha. Might tackle the older game later on. Even if II can be played without I would rather do them in order. I and II are originally NES games, correct? Do they have re-releases?

Hmmm... Yeah, makes a lot of sense really. It does help, Milly, truly. But, uh... to be honest, I was seriously considering starting with Persona 5 Royale, especially given its overwhelming good reception and just how frigin stylish the game looks, but really wanted my first expierence with the Megami Tensei franchise to be completely blind. Long story short, I have a couple of friends that are big Persona fans and constantly gush over the games to me, spoling a big part of the plots. It doesn't dissuade me or anything from trying the games itself, but would rather have that first experience fully on my own and after that I was thinking of going for P5 (and passing on P5 when it was released is something I really regret). I know that SMT and Persona might be pretty different but still. I was considering waiting for Persona 6 as well, but who knows when it will come out. Lol, it's hard to explain this without sounding spoiled.

Reliable leaker Midori did say something like, 2025? Maybe 2026.
Hm, not that far away actually. You guys have a leaker? Neat.
Right, gotcha, then previous advice applies. The cheapest entry is P4G, most expensive rn is P5R. Up to you to decide what you want, or just hop in with Vengeance like the rest of us in a month.
I think I'll wait for Vengeance and tag along with you guys, that sounds fun. After that I think I'll go for P5R. Fortunately, money isn't an issue.

Out of curiosity, recurring characters such as Lucifer and YHWH are the same individual through the series or different incarnations of the character?

Yes, and no.

SMT IV goes into this concept, where he explicitly calls his current state an incarnation - implying he’s aware of previous selves, before dying. YHVH is an exception, as he rules over mostly universes in the form of a singular Godhead (just think most games in SMT have a large, bald, gold head watching over the cosmos), while his real, infinite form stands outside the “universe” (take this with a grain of salt, it’s actually way larger).

Yeah, if Vengeance isn’t on your radar before, put it on now. Not only is Demi-Fiend’s DLC now free, but you can use him as a party member now.

Different incarnations and YHVH is a single entity. I see. Yeah, I remember reading that YHVH isn't quite the almighty deity he thinks he is and is just an extension of the Great Reason or Great Will, I think.

Demi-Fiend is the MC of the PS2 Shin Megami Tensei, right? He plays a part in the story or is just a cameo of sorts? Inb4 featuring Dante from Devil May Cry series jokes

Latter. YHVH is the Great Will. More in-depth in our frankly outdated and soon to be updated obese blog.

Both, and someone you can fight with. So, I’m pretty stoked.

Rip Bozo to those of us who bought the original game, and aren't gonna be offered an upgrade package to Vengeance by Atlus.
I know it's annoying but cmon, why would they give away the entire original story plus the new story that's as big as the old one for free? Temper expectations.

Who said anything GIVING away for free? I'm saying offer those who have the base game an upgrade package to Vengeance at a lower price.

Oh, right that's a thing. Only seen that with Skyrim, which is made by notorious studio Bethesda.

Still, I find Vengeance's situation fair. It's only 60 dollars compared to Reload's 70, it's now multi-platform, its been 3 years since the original game, and it's content is now doubled along with reworked mechanics.
