Normally, Ive seen that Dedede kept relying on monsters from the NME to deal with fights, so he wouldnt have much experience using himself to fight (aside from being seen swinging his hammer).

Will wait for more input.

dedede once could knockout his whole guard of waddle dees .without a hammer. (though he did have bump up dedede) and consistently hurts escargoon. so even without a hammer he's not defenceless.
