Jack is back: Samurai Jack discussion thread

Also, hate to be that guy, but:

I didn't like yesterday's episode.

Not because it made Jack x Ashi canon, or because of their age difference, or because it "ruined the characters" or anything like that. No. I'm 100% fine with Jack x Ashi being a thing and the people whining about it on Tumblr can go explode.

I didn't like the episode because of three things: It was 100% filler. It was rushed. It was unsubtle and cringy as ****.

I mean, I get it. They only have 10 episodes so if they want to make the romance develop, they have to sacrifice some significant time on time, but I feel it could have been more balanced. I've been noticing this as of late, but they really needed double the number of episodes to make this work. So many plot-points that should be whole episodes are kinda cut short, like Jack regaining his Sword in his mental journey, Ashi confronting her mother, Jack and Ashi confronting The Omen, etc etc. Seriously, just look at last episode with how they introduce Jack's inner rage and have him overcome it in 2 minutes, or how Ashi kills her own mother with 0 hesitation and they never address it again.

As for the episode content itself, I get it again. They were trying to play it all up for comedy (The song at the end kinda makes it obvious), likely to make this a breather episode before the Finale, but it just... Doesn't work. The tone-shift from the rest of the season is so ridiculous I might as well have been watching an episode of Johnny Bravo.

The jokes are incredibly cringey adolescent humor, and because of it Jack is suddenly acting like a 14 year old boy throughout the episode. I mean, some of it works like the scenes where they're just looking at each other smiling, but the dialogue made me wanna kill myself ("Aaah, Ashi, you're naked!").

I'm happy Jack x Ashi is official now, but... Bleh.

They needed 20 episodes. At least 15.

I feel like this show is being a bit too ambitious with how much they want to make with how little it actually has to work with.

It wants to develope a romance with Ashi, have the subplot with Omen, have the themes of Jack's inner demons, an Aku cult subplot, Jack regaining his sword, Scaramouche subplot, Scotsman's return, possibly Guardian's return, Aku vs Jack, Jack trying to return to the past and the finale of the series all in 10 episodes.

It's just impossible to fit all that in such a small amount without there being pacing, developement or logical issues within the story.

I overall love this season and think the it's doing amazing with what little it had to work with, but I feel it would be much better if they were given 20-30 episodes sadly.

I think you're right on that, Ryu. With the amount of stuff that was shown, Gennedy should have done a longer season with this. The romance part, even if some didn't like it or just not much (i mean, i don't mind it but kind of more prefer that of the student x teacher relationship though), it could have been with more episodes really.

And with how there's only 10, i also would have liked it to have more Aku with Greg Baldwin in it. I still like Mako's voice role for Aku, but Greg's done a good enough job that i would like to hear more of it before the show ends.

But yeah overall, it's just not enough for here really. It's good and all that we have Season 5 finally after all these years, i would have probably liked it if it was longer like the previous ones.

@Cross Yeah. I still love Season 5 as a whole. Especially the first 3 episodes which were near masterpieces.

But I do think the show suffers from being given too little to work with. Which the writers can't be blamed too much for. Besides maybe that they should've been more conservative with the content they wanted to fit in such a short time.

This is me I hate to admit...

So when do you guys think Jack's real name will be revealed finally at? To me, i have a feeling it won't be revealed until like the very final end of the last episode.

But i wanted to hear what you guys think of this...

Actually there is a reference to Jack's real name in the first season. In episode nine of the first season when jack meets the underwater creatures he almost says his real name when introducing himself. We don't know what it is, but it starts with the letter G.

@SageM: I'm quite aware of that, yes. But i was saying as in his full name being revealed and known finally.

I just think it'd be better overall to keep the mystery of it, but I don't really care if his name is revealed to be George, Gary, Grobbelnak, just the letter G, Ganondorf, it really could be anything they come up with. They may even pull a dick move and go with a "What's your real name?", and Jack says "It's G-" before cutting to the credits or him being cut off.

Says the one talking about the title show about a Japanese samurai under the title Samurai Jack.

I don't think ethnicity is an issue when it comes to his name.

I'm still rather offended by your comment but okay then if that's how you want to roll then...

? That's an odd reason to be offended by thinking of a random possiblity of a name, but whatever, sorry if I for-some-reason offended you my guy.

Tomorrow should be pretty hype, though. I'm not sure how they're going to fit the Scotsman and Aku's initial response to Jack being back into the next and two-parter episode. I wonder if each part of the finale will be extended to 40 min. each to compensate, but I imagine they'll find some way to squeeze it in.

I don't think she's in a different tier altogether. She should probably get similar stats to her base form but they're probably to a higher degree (unless she gets some crazy feats in the next episode). Let's wait and see in the next episode. As for her Regenerationn, I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer that.

Uh I just watched the episode and I have only 1 thing to say; wwwwwhhhhhhyyyyyy?! God in heaven they don't want to give Jack a break do they? At least give the dude a moment to catch his breath. But on the plus side Ahu is still bloody hilarious

I don't think she'll change tier even with the new form, even with the new form, she was still losing to Jack, but not by much, so I'd say she's comparable to him. Then there's the regenerative ability. Also. Jack lost his sword, again.

Kinda disappointed with how they treated the Guardian. They didn't have to hint at his return in the promo to get everyone super-hyped and then briefly reveal he's just dead.

The Guardian was likely waiting to fight Jack again in order to fulfil his prophecy, but was found by Aku.

Yes, my expectations are rather low for the finale. The fate of the Guardian was more disappointing than I realized. I could barely focus on the rest of the episode after that unfortunate scene. I mean, do his glasses count as a cameo or....

He was definitely the best part of the episode. Baldwin is doing more than a fine job. They couldn't have found a better replacement for lord Mako.

If The Guardian had to be dead, I wish they at least put something more meaningful than a pair of glasses.

Perhaps something like Jack finding Guardian about to die and telling Jack that he needs to still move forward on his quest right before he's dead. I don't know.

If The Guardian was was going to just amount to an Easter Egg, there was no need at all to be hyping him like the promo and (sort of) Genndy's Q&A did.

People are saying that since we never saw a corpse and someone's credited to voicing him, it's possible he might still be alive. I heard others theorize that he might join Scotsman's evergrowing army. I'd love for that to happen but it doesn't seem very likely at all.

I don't think Guardian is dead. If he's gonna show he only has one episode to do it, but hey rather late than never. Also as it was mentioned I believe Kevin Michael Richardson is credited to voicing him, he has to show in some way.

While the latter half of this season has been rather bloated, holy **** the pacing in this episode was excellent. Especially when compared to the previous one.

I'm pretty sure the Guardian will return, likely being part of The Scotsmans army. Also when Ashi said to Jack for him to kill her, won't lie, I cried a little bit.
