I think gray take this due, to power of ice, he can freeze flame(freeze natsu flame in tower of heaven) and he is a better tactician. Can create ice which is hard to melt

I dont think it can effect opponet directly, also she have limited magic nullification, she dont have range attack while gray can shot error form a mile away with accuracy, gray is master in both long amd close range combat, and its only 8-A version used, he cant take enemy without making plan, as far as i know gray should take this.

Then gray can just use h2h, he is smart don't forget intelligence is also a power, defeat ultear by fusing his blood with ice, defeat rufus who can also nullify his magic by making a lot of weapon at once, defeat silver with ironball(although silver was not trying) join avatar to get some information, etc thier are many examples, what if he created ice canon and shoot, and kwon use nullifies magic to think she is safe, but those canon contain normal stone instead of ice(he did it against silver) or just use ironball like he did again silver? Ok But gray dont have trainig? He trained with ul, also if a character didnt want to kill other doesnt mean he is weak.

Hmm, considiring ul is wizard saint lvl , also in episode 6(or maybe 5) gray show some good h2h battle( but its only happen one time, or maybe more time in anime/manga but i dont remember it)
