Except those galaxies and millions of stars are smaller than fruit flies and only get launched as fast as the characters rather than at MFTL+ speeds, so them being universes isn't very significant. Perhaps it could be a resistance to radiation for the characters though.

They could work as different keys. Also, I really don't see why Plants vs. Zombies 2 has a key separation from the first game. Just because Lightning Reeds only first appeared in Plants vs. Zombies 2, doesn't mean all the characters spontaneously got stronger than they were in the first game.
