An announcement about Imgur:

Given our recent problems with Imgur-hosted comicbook scans disappearing, here is the advice that I have received regarding how to minimise these risks, but I do not know for certain if it is accurate:

1) Being logged in with an anonymous account to Imgur when uploading images there significantly reduces the risk of having them deleted later.

2) Imgur also allegedly breaks private links at some point. So if we make them public they likely turn visible again.

3) Directly linking to the images may bypass the 404 error messages.

I have talked with a Fandom staff member about hosting comicbook and manga scans in our wiki instead, but he told me that this would make us vulnerable to copyright complaints, so we likely have to choose the least bad option, which seems to be to continue with Imgur, and to also always use source references for the scans in combination with using them in our wiki, preferably by including page numbers in addition to the specific issue, so the scans can easily be found again if an image link turns inactive.

Properly written discussion thread tags:

All discussion thread tags are required to match the titles of our corresponding wiki pages and to not use # or @ in the beginning, so discussion threads about a character or verse can easily be found by clicking on the "Discussions" links near the bottom of our wiki pages.

Do not ever lend access to your accounts to other people here, especially not banned members:

This will be registered as overlaps/sockpuppetry by our forum, and as such may lead to bans, in lack of other options, as it is hard for you to prove that you are different people afterwards.

Translation Helper applications:

Given that most of our current translation helpers seem to be inactive regarding translation requests, we need members who are highly knowledgeable/fluent in Japanese or/and Chinese to continuously help out with the following discussion thread. Doing so competently and regularly will lead to Translation Helper staff positions if you inform me or @AKM sama about it.

A new wiki template called "Border".

We have introduced a new template called Border, designed to replace the use of <div> tags for adding borders. From now on, please use the Border template when adding borders to any content. This is what we mean by bordered content:

https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/User:Just_a_Random_Butler/BorderTest2

This template streamlines the styling process, making it more efficient and user-friendly. It provides a cleaner, more customisable, and a more consistent experience across pages by eliminating the need for inline CSS, which can be cumbersome and inconsistent when used. With clear options for customization, it simplifies editing without complex code.

For instructions on how to use the template and its parameters, please visit this page:

https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/Standard_Format_for_Border_Template

A new rule violations subforum:

Previously, all rule violation reports have been handled in the thread below, where both the report, the accused's defense, and the staff deliberation regarding the matter are public:

https://www.vsbattles.com/threads/rule-violation-reports-new-forum.107529/

A new subforum has been created for the purpose of handling rule violation reports that concern matters sensitive enough that handling them publicly would be inappropriate. The new subforum is titled "Private Rule Violations Reports" and can be found on the forum homepage beneath the "FC/OC VS Battles" section.

Any member can make a thread in this sub-forum, but only the author can see it, and only our wiki administrators are able to see all of the discussion threads there. The accused should also be contacted in order to provide a defense, and the punitive outcomes of such threads will still be announced publicly to maintain transparency.

From this point forward reports involving off-site conduct, as well as reports regarding sensitive topics such as bigotry or criminal conduct, should be made in the new private sub-forum.

Updated Range standards:

A new range rating has been added, Extradimensional:

"Extradimensional: Attacks and abilities that can reach outside of the conventional space-time of a single universe, in a way that isn't covered by any other range ratings. Typically by being able to reach into parts of, but not the entirety of, different realms that lie outside of a standard multiverse, or by being able to reach into multiple timelines simultaneously without covering a universal distance."

If you know a profile where that rating seems fitting, please make a Content Revision Thread to get it added.

you speak japanese?

Off site reports should have always been handled in private. I think this change is good.

Ngl, I think the RVR system altogether doesn't work and it only causes unnecessary drama either here or off-site. I think rule violations should be handled in private, at least the most serious ones that would cause a lot of drama.

AKM plans to handle it together with other staff promotion announcements in the same discussion thread. 🙏

The entire FANDOM network's business model is based around the fact of highlighting and indexing copyrighted media. 🗿
At most just use the relevant fragments of pages if they're that worried.

The problem is that fragments of pages do not tend to provide a sufficiently good context, and we are likely talking about eventually hosting tens of thousands of copyrighted full comic book pages if we go down the hosting path, which would likely place our wiki in the line of fire for Shueisha, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, etc., which seems like a very unnecessary risk to take.

what about using lesser known, but still reliable image hosting sites? I have a few ideas.

The problem is that they might eventually go bankrupt and shut down or be financially unable to defend themselves at all against targeted copyright complaints and have to remove all comicbook scans via A.I.

An announcement about Imgur:

Given our recent problems with Imgur-hosted comicbook scans disappearing, here is the advice that I have received regarding how to minimise these risks, but I do not know for certain if it is accurate:
If Imgur is being too finicky to be considered super reliable, something like Gyazo could be an additional option. They are big enough that bankruptcy seems implausible, and they seem to keep files forever, as long as the original poster doesn’t delete their account (something that likely won’t happen if they are active here).

I am not sure. I think that I and our current and former content moderators had a discussion about that Gyazo is unreliable to use.

@Elizhaa @Starter_Pack @Abstractions @Colonel_Krukov @Just_a_Random_Butler @Dereck03 @Shadowbokunohero @QrowBarr @Crazylatin77 @Zaratthustra @ElixirBlue @Tllmbrg @Nehz_XZX @Therefir @IdiosyncraticLawyer @GarrixianXD @Catzlaflame @Vzearr

What do you think?

If Gyazo doesn't work, there's still plenty of other alternatives out there for imgur. The internet is a big place. I'm not sure how reliable financially most of the ones listed on this website are, but there's definitely more options than there seems 👀

I will ask our bureaucrats and administrators about it. 🙏

@Antvasima I can personally vouch for ImgBB as a splendid alternative image host: https://imgbb.com/upload Doesn't have any of the BS that ships with Imgur.

I also recommend using the Internet Archive https://web.archive.org/ as a short-term solution for disappearing Imgur links. All images archived with the Wayback Machine will remain accessible there indefinitely, even if Imgur removes the original uploads.

ImgBB is stellar for reliability, but it lacks many vital features like video uploads, galleries, and headers/captions.

Wayback is super reliable too, but it loads very slowly on certain devices, and it would be tedious to use on account of its archiving process, compared with sites where you can just drag an image and post it after 2 seconds.

My personal favorite alternative as a victim of Imgur's scan purge is ImageChest. It has video uploads, galleries, captions/headers, ease of use, and pretty much all of Imgur's features and more. The problem with that one is that it's newer and more of an indie site, and might not be as ensured in the long-term as a larger site like Gyazo, ImgBB, or Imgur.

I added the following text to the first post in this thread:

"A new range rating has been added, Extradimensional:

Not really my place, but can't we use archive sites such archive.li and waybackmachine. Should be easier for everyone.
Well, it takes considerable time to use them, as each image link would have to be added manually, and we have tens of thousands of images to back up, so I do not know if it is realistic, unless somebody can find an automated program at Fandom's Dev wiki that can help us out, for example. 🙏

Does this range rating apply to characters leaping between 4D standard timelines? Or are we talking about higher dimensional timelines beyond the standard multiverse?

@Agnaa

Me when new wiki formatting options just drops (I'm awful at making pages and am busy with college work but still love aesthetically pleasing options):

No, that would be Interdimensional, as it only involves two standard 4-D timelines.

Extradimensional is for more than two standard 4-D timelines simultaneously (i.e. mindhax across 10 timelines' earths), and for higher-dimensional spaces.
