Devil May Cry Discussion Thread

SSM takes GoW franchise very seriously. Like machine on an ambitious machine. Which is why both Sony investors and audeince take the franchise seriously. Same can be said about Fromsoft. Hence the regular investment and game dev cycles.
Extremely heavy on this. Santa Monica cares about their franchise, and didn't give up on it even when Ascension was signaling "franchise fatigue". They worked at it at 100% effort when people thought the story of Kratos was seemingly dead in the water and the result was a game that outsold the entire Greek saga combined and carved GoW into pop culture for good.

Fromsoft is consistent. They have their path of success and proven skillset and stick to and polish it with each entry. All this leading to Elden Ring breaking records left and right and basically dominating the entire gaming world for years. People complain about them being samey and they keep releasing games that sell millions in days.

DMC has all the potential of God of War, but Capcom just... doesn't care from what I can tell. I get it, Resident Evil is the money printer, but Sony didn't strangle Horizon, or Ghost of Yotei to make 10 more God of War games. I dunno why they can't do the same.

Why Planck why must you guys have the power of hope, while DMC has the power of cope 😭
Cope is what makes us wrong. It is why we are here. It what we fight with when all else is lost.

Jokes aside, I think a big part of it is that Santa Monica built itself up around God of War in a way Capcom really can't around a single IP. It's more than any one developer. When the original creator David Jaffe left, the franchise didn't die out and flounder, it adapted and new and old talent stepped up.

In a alternate Universe GoW is the one with the Netflix Animated series (Also a reboot) and a failed Reboot game

Difference is that Santa Monica develops GoW. This is not exactly Naughty Dogs makes TLOU, Uncharted and GoW at same time. Capcom rn trusted DMC to Division 1 which develops Resident Evil too. Obviously Resident Evil makes more money. So for them it's better to make new Resident Evils than Devil May Cry. I think it is better to trust another subdivision instead of giving everything to one ngl

nah DMC2 soundtrack so good I'm literally considering replaying the whole thing again

when the reboot or netflix ost does that then we can talk

Capcom dropped ball with DMC almost every alternate game. With DMC2, with DMC4, with Reboot etc... So it never got the sincere effort it needed as a franchise to grow into proper maturity. Hence there is no confidence. Compare that with Resident Evil, with very few misses but mostly consistent results, hence the continued investment.
If Capcom had been more ambitious and serious about DMC development, went big with proportional investment, it would be just as successful.
Let's not forget Monster Hunter secretly kept Capcom alive during and after the "Crapcon" days between the unnecessary DmC reboot, RE being in spin-off limbo and Asura's Wrath being an expensive fail.

MH only became truly mainstream thanks to Monster Hunter World and now it's the company's second largest IP behind RE (even if they dropped the ball somewhat with MH Wilds).

DMC is the perfect of example if it ain't broke don't fix it yet it gets "fixed" anyway and it never works (jeez I wonder why?) instead of just building upon and refining the formula with each game (though this isn't an issue exclusive to DMC).

On the brightside, at least DMC still has a somewhat stable future. I honestly have little hope for even a decent future for Dragons Dogma after DD2 is pretty much dead now after receiving minimum post-launch support with zero plans for an expansion and many players have went back to the DD: Dark Arisen now despite DD2 selling 4+ million copies globally.

Even when Capcom take an IP seriously, it's not a guarantee positive.

The big problem here are the suits meddling with the developers, forcing deadlines and unreasonable objectives. Its not the first time they do it and it definitely won't be the last.

If the games got the development they deserved then capcom would have an infinite money glitch but alas they won't learn after all those times they messed up.

Each problem game had someone who thought they knew better causing the problem.

DMC2: Some guy didn't like Dante so he changed him into a silent character. Result was a Dante that practically wasn't Dante anymore.

DMC4: Corporate pushed for the game to release a year early. Game was still good, but things were incomplete.

Reboot: Part of the Western push that was happening at the time. That whole push failed and cost Capcom lots of money, and the guy driving it got fired.

Something will be revealed eventually. It's only a matter of when.
I really doubt it.

Like I said so many times in the past, the series ending at 5 is completely fine and a very good ending all things considered. I would accept remakes and adaptations of the novels into games since the stories are so good it would be awesome to have those as playable things but I can undestand not wanting to adapt them also doesn't change the canon or anything like that so...

I mean. What could be possibly 6 storyline even?
I have seen some casuals throw their fanfics ranging from Mundus coming back for some reason and being relevant to Dante having a secret kid he never knew ignoring the fact that Dante distanced himself from people since a very young age, and some even want Sparda to come back because he left home to fight someone and has been like that for the last 32 years without no one noticing.

ngl there are no stories to follow up after the end of 5 that don't require some power creep or plot shit to work, Dante and Vergil are the strongest, Nero is the next one in line and is protecting the human world from his side while the twins do it from hell and every single demon king is either dead or sealed.

At this point just adapt PoC into a proper mainline game and give us young Dante throwing hands with a demon king.

Capcom had already confirmed that they were going to make Devil May Cry games.

The most likely scenario is either remakes (like RE) or big remasters (like Dead Rising Deluxe Remasters).

New characters

Still better than Dante x Trish though
@GilverTheProtoAngelo would argue otherwise apparently that ship is kinda canon

Wasnt the message about improving the IP? that doesn't necessarily mean new games

They had said the same thing for Megaman and a few days later a new Mega Man game was announced at the Games Awards (the last Mega Man game dates back to 2018).

So yeah, I'm hopeful, especially considering the sales of DMC5.

Who knows since when said megaman game had been in development they just used the announcement to make hype, moreover the fact that Itsuno almost had to beg to make DMC5 should tell you there won't be any new games, no matter how successful the franchise might have been in the past, let alone now that Itsuno is gone.

I'm obviously talking about remakes... 5 completes the series logically speaking (but Crapcom might **** things up so can't be sure)

Besides all that though, there can be some multiverse nonsense too like with PoC currently so potential is all there but not the company to utilize it.
