DCU General Discussion Thread

It seems that James Gunn recorded the director's commentary for Superman under the assumption that it wouldn't be released until after Peacemaker season 2 concluded, as someone on Reddit uploaded a snippet of the commentary where James Gunn briefly discusses a scene from the season 2 finale of Peacemaker.

For some less potentially spoilerish snippets from the commentary that were uploaded by the same person, there's also:

The scrapped scene is ridiculous. Was it necessary to see Krypto getting punched? No. But neither is making fuss about it. For some reason, killing people is fine but, oh no, the cute animal gets hurt by the BAD GUY? That's unbearable! Even ART THE CLOWN wouldn't be so bad, oh the horror, think of the children!

That's honestly ridiculous;

Also, the Circe blog is still waiting there, don't know if that's okay now:

Welp 😬

Hey Rick, while you're over at Belle Reve, you might wanna give another old friend of yours a call...

Bro if GI doesn't show up at this point, I'm gonna consider it a fumble on James' part.
There’s no way G.I. doesn’t show up. You don’t just introduce a Nazi-killing robot, have a world infested by nothing but Nazis, and not bring those two things together.

It's canon, Adrian has 1 braincell shared across the multiverse. Although with his dad still around, how is Adrian like this in Earth 2. His dad leaving was a major catalyst for his mental state. Also he is stacked, my god forget the raw cash, those drugs are easily worth 500 million+.

Economos just tanked all his stocks with the biggest fumble. But no Judo master, I am wondering if he will end up saving Economos.

Just the riff alone and then the theme coming in full swing, Lex has aura. And not held back by PG-13 dialogue.

I don't know if this will sound weird, but I really like the way Lex speaks. Just his general cadence and his tone of voice sound so right. Props to Nicholas Hoult.

Which is something really needed to make a character like Lex work. The only difference between a generic pure evil boss and a memorable one is dialogue. Take Frieza as an example.

Highlights from a new James Gunn interview:

Gunn on the alternate dimension's name: "People don't name their planets other than Earth, so to them it's Earth, just like to us and the DCU it's Earth. I don't think people think of their planets as having numbers, but yeah, I call it Earth-X."

Does this twist mean we’ll get to see G.I. Robot in live-action?

"The answer to that question, which, this is going to be all anybody talks about from this interview, is yes, but not necessarily when you think you're going to see him. So not necessarily in Peacemaker season 2."

How did Lex's surprise cameo come about, and what was it like letting him get fully R-rated in that scene?

"It was cool. Nick's a big fan of the show. Everything's connected, so there is a story here that we're telling throughout the DCU, and this is connected very much to Man of Tomorrow. There's story elements that we're telling that are mostly just about this season of television — the Justice League isn't going to go to Earth-X next year and stomp out evil. That's about Christopher Smith's journey in season 2. But there are other elements, and part of that is the relationship between Rick Flag and Lex Luthor, and that's an important thing going forward in the DCU and Man of Tomorrow and so on. So he was a part of the series from the beginning, he was really excited about it, and it was really fun directing him because the character subtly shifted.

There is a difference in the way I write Superman and the way I write Peacemaker. One is obviously more mature adult — maybe more immature, but also more adult — but it's also more naturalistic in certain ways and Superman's a little more heightened. Seeing Nick adapt to that dialogue and that situation instantly was really cool.
"

Hopefully there is a big twist to further change the plot because at the basic level, we are back in season 1 minus the butterfly plot. "Peacemaker must forgo of his family ties and kill his racist father (+brother now) as he realizes he can't have it good" We have been here, done that.

Also is it me or is Economos staying in the house a very out of character choice. He is a ***** who is afraid of white dragon but decide to stay in his house eating a apple. That's 90's slasher teenage victim level of stupid choice.

Maybe I’m reading too deep into this, but I feel like the fact that he saying ‘not necessarily’ instead of a solid no means G.I. is definitely in Peacemaker.

I agree. But more because, well, if he is in it, it would kinda ruin the fun if James was just like, "Oh damn, you got me! He's gonna show up in Episode 8 at specifically timecode 32:41!"

"Listen, of course I wasn't unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic," Gunn tells EW. "But I think we'll hold off from what exactly is happening."
In other words, it’s absolutely Brainiac and he just doesn’t want to say it yet

I can't say I agree with that at all, to be honest. That feels like an intentionally reductive way to describe things.

Out of curiosity, if y’all could pick any three characters and guarantee that they’ll appear in the DCU, who would you pick?

For me, it’d be Cassandra Cain, Tim Drake and Zatanna.

I would've brought up Ultra-Humanite being thrown around in social media (as Superman's first arch-enemy and all), but the third/Gerald was already in a newspaper on The Ties That Grind and stakes are predictable.

Jason Todd, Poison Ivy and Darkseid.

I fear that Gunn is going to avoid Darkseid for a long time to not make it look like DCEU. Which would be disappointing as he is THE big bad of DC

Combine the screen time that the three choices get and give it all to Krypto

Jason Todd, Poison Ivy and Darkseid.

I mean, Darkseid can still appear later but introducing him so early would not only bring the DCEU to mind, it would just be too early. If he has to appear, I imagine Gunn will do things slowly, like mentioning Apokolips through Krypton's archives or the Green Lantern and then slowly going for a confrontation with Darkseid after a long time. Maybe something along the line of Superman TAS with several indirect confrontations and meetings before a proper fight.

Honorable mentions: Trigon, Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson, hopefully Pierce Brosnan can somehow return, he was perfect), The Question

Related to that, what would you want the DCU to do with DC characters and stories? For me, that would be the following:

Storylines about mythology and the gods: Mostly about the Olympians since they're easily the deities with the strongest focus thanks to Wonder Woman. And by storyline, I mean actual storyline. Not the American Gods-like deal with "gods need worship to stay relevant, now they're secondary at best" or what the DCEU did with them having been slaughtered or relegated to the background (even though I really like Ares from the first movie). I want Zeus, Ares, Poseidon, Athena and co to have actual presence in the story. I want literal gods still dressed in Ancient Greece fashion messing with humans for various reasons, I want Ares to plot wars, etc. And I want them to be powerful, like at the top of their power. I want it to be near-impossible to directly fight them, I want displays of power worthy of mythology. It would also be really cool if gods from other pantheons would show up, like the Norse Gods. Odin in particular. I want mythological stuff in general to appear.

Supernatural focused stuff: I'm really into fantasy elements and I love the occult side of DC. We know Swamp Thing will have his live-action story so this gives us hope but I really want more of the magical side of DC to be put to live-action. I want Constantine (though topping Matt Ryan will be damn near impossible, Ryan IS Constantine, he is to John what Downey Jr is to Iron Man and Hugh Jackman to Wolverine), Zatanna, Dr Fate, Madame Xanadu, Morgaine Le Fay, Merlin. Fate in particular I feel could get an awesome storyline with his inner conflict related to Nabu and the Lords of Order. I would also love the Justice League Dark to be in the DCU.

More esoterical & primordial side of DC: I would love if Gunn decided to tackle the more greater-scale aspects of DC. You know, the Source, the Monitor Overvoid, Lucifer Morningstar. It would be interesting to see how they deal with Heaven, Hell, etc. Not necessarily too much focus, just one or two flicks or series and then they make cameos, appearences or references. Like, imagine a comic-book accurate Lucifer, with style, power, sociopathic behavior and all. Similary, I would love Hellblazer to get a focus. I want something like City of Demons, with Constantine and notable characters from Hellblazer and the more disturbing side of DC, like Nergal, the First of the Fallen, Chas Chandler, Nightmare Nurse, Papa Midnight, etc. Imagine the variety of characters and interactions.

More comic-book accurate Batman stuff: I love Nolan's take, I love Battinson but I'm getting tired of Batman being only seen through the realistic lens. Creature Commandos already showed him interacting with the weird, full comic book world so we know he will be more "fantastical" but I want more. Brave and the Bold will have Bats meet Damian so the League of Assassins will probably appear and if they do, I want them to embrace the weird stuff. I want Ra's al Ghul to be the 600 years old genocidal conqueror who baths in a fountain of youth that can rejuvenate him and even resurrect the dead like in the comics, I want Poison Ivy to actually control plants, I want Solomon Grundy to be an actual zombie. And above all, I want the Joker from the comics. I love Ledger's take but I'm tired of so many versions always imitating this. I want a more comic-book accurate Joker, like in TAS or the Arkham games.

Variations of enemies for big movies: Should the DCU go the MCU way with a few big reunion films, I want each film of these great reunions to be different in tone and scale and have different enemies. We will already get Brainiac and if Darkseid appears, he should be the great big bad but there are plenty of other enemies in DC that can serve as great villains for a major film. Mongul, Despero, the Red Lanterns, the White Martians, Eclipso, Prometheus. Heck, we could have the Legion of Doom with previously established villains, like Lex, the Joker, Gorilla Grodd, Sinestro, etc.

Introduce not often used characters: This one I have good hope for, Gun has a taste for using obscure characters. I want the DCU to show people like Static Shock, Onomathopeia, Black Alice, Yuga Khan, Detective Chimpanzee. You know, weird characters few people know about.

Darkseid's powerset: Minor one but I wish adaptations would remember Darkseid has other things in his arsenal than the Omega Beams. Most versions just show him using the beams and his super strength and speed, with the other power he uses being at most being flying. In the comics, he can control energy, has telekinesis, transmutation, necromancy, can trap souls, etc. I want an adaptation that goes with that.

Related to that, what would you want the DCU to do with DC characters and stories? For me, that would be the following:
Keep the clay origin for Wonder Woman: Making her one of Zeus’ innumerable children is so incredibly lame. Diana being crafted out of clay and given life by the goddesses is so much more unique. Also, to quote Grant Morrison, “Wonder Woman should be no man’s daughter.”

Wonder Woman romances: I’m tired of Steve Trevor. The DCEU gave us more than enough of him, I don’t want to see that relationship again in the DCU. I also don’t want to see Diana have any sort of romantic connection to the rest of the Trinity. She, Bruce and Clark are just friends and nothing more. If Diana’s gotta have a romance, I think they should go wild and give her something with Cheetah. That’d be interesting, at the very least.

Emphasize the Batfamily: If they’re gonna do the Batfamily, they need to commit to it. I want to see the family actually being, y’know, a family and working together. They should also be their own characters, not just accessories to Batman, and I definitely don’t want to see them jobbing just to make Bruce look better. Also I really don’t want them to skip Tim Drake, he’s incredibly important to the mythos and his role can’t just be shunted off to Damian.

Show the Lantern Corps: After being practically nonexistent in the DCEU, I want to see the Green Lanterns be fully explored in the DCU. I’m not super thrilled with Hal Jordan being near retirement already, but I can forgive it as long as the Green Lantern mythos actually get to be relevant. And on that note, I want to see the full range of the Emotional Spectrum. Atrocitus and Black Hand have been theorized to be in the Lanterns show, and I would love if that were true.

New villains: I want to see the DCU use villains that the movies haven’t really touched yet (I’m also counting Cheetah in that, because she was done very poorly in the DCEU), and I want to see the usual go-to choices (namely Zod and the Joker) take a backseat for a while.

Make Wally West the main Flash: Barry got a nine-season long TV show that lasted for nearly a decade, and then he got a theatrical movie (which was trash, granted, but still). I think it’s time to let the character of Barry Allen rest and give Wally West the spotlight.

Some tidbits from yet another James Gunn interview:

I’m always curious about how the role of studio head is treating you. Have there been moments that have recontextualized your past Marvel experiences? Have there been instances where you better understood what Marvel boss Kevin Feige was going through at the time or why he had to make a certain decision?

Yes, it’s mostly in the day-to-day thoughtfulness of Kevin Feige and talking to him and seeing him sitting there, thinking. I often see myself doing the same thing with directors or writers. So I understand Kevin more [now], and I’ve learned a lot from him. I always liked Kevin. I never had problems with Kevin in terms of working with him. It was a really, really good partnership. The same with [Marvel Studios co-president] Lou [D’Esposito]. So it was a really good situation.

I haven’t ever been like, “Oh, I complained about this thing about Kevin, and now I see where it is with me.” If there’s one thing that I sometimes would complain about, it was the looseness of things. It was where they were going or where they were heading and how they were connected, or what they were doing with my characters and this or that. So I probably have a little bit more compassion for him in that respect because things shift and change all the time. It’s hard.
The magic trick of Peacemaker season one is that you managed to redeem Chris (Cena) to the audience after he killed Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in The Suicide Squad. But he’s not redeemed in the eyes of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior). They may not even be aware that Chris survived the Corto Maltese mission. Do you hope to resume that conflict someday?

No.

I’m surprised to hear that.

No, not really. I don’t [hope to resume that conflict]. People are always asking me about stuff from The Suicide Squad, and The Suicide Squad is a difficult thing because it is not DCU. But there aren’t too many things in it that aren’t [DCU]. Unlike Peacemaker season one — which is completely DCU, besides the ending and one or two mentions of different things — The Suicide Squad brings up more questions than answers.

Now, I’m not saying that those characters won’t reappear. I’m just saying that I am [already] dealing with Peacemaker’s guilt over killing Rick Flag Jr. and his repercussions for that. And that story is being told through his relationship with Rick Flag Sr. To tell it through Bloodsport, who was friends with Rick Flag Jr., would be an emotionally diminished story compared to the one I’m telling now. So it doesn’t interest me at all.

Other things he's confirmed recently:

I pressed Gunn for clarification about his remark about Damian’s “parentage” and asked whether Damian Wayne is still in the movie or not. Curiously, Gunn’s response was not a simple yes or no: “I think you have to wait to see exactly what's happening.”
please please please please please replace Damian and make Tim the main Robin, it’d be so much better-

I'm kind of split on this one.

On one hand, I do prefer Tim to Damian even though my favorite Robin remains Dick (I don't include Jason because he's better as Red Hood).

On the other hand, I really want to see a comics-accurate Ra's al Ghul in live-action, with 600 years old longevity, Lazarus Pit and all. The DCU will fully embrace the comics's stuff, with magic, mutation and all, and if Damian is to appear, then Ra's and the League will definitely show up to and what we got from the DCU so far gives me hope for a faithful adaptation of Ra's. So while I'm not against not having Damian, I kind of wish he will appear just so we can have a proper Ra's

To be fair, if they start with Tim, they can still do Damian eventually. In fact, that’s part of the reason why I think Tim is a better starting point. They can save Damian until Clark and Lois are at a point where they can have Jon, and then we can get Super Sons in the DCU.
