Currently azathoth's Throne and the ultimate void from 'through the gates of the silver key' are treated as one and the same.

In this thread i'll explain why that's wrong.

Also, i'll just link the two most important stories for anyone to read (because am to lazy to search for the full quotes for this first point am making)

In 'dream quest of unknown kaddah' Randolph Carter was traveling very close to azathoth and his court.

But in 'through the gates of the silver key' the sequel to 'dream quest of unknown kaddah' it was stated that no man has reached the border to the ultimate gate since the ancient times.

In the same story it's stated even going beyond the first Gate was completely new to Randolph Carter.

And even if this isn't enough Yog Sothoth and Azathoth are NEVER, EVER compered to each other in any way. Hell, Gates are only ever mentioned in the stories Yog appears in and never are even talked about in the stories Azathoth appears in.

Now, this out the way.
Here's how cosmology is going to look like:

The physical Universe = low 2-C to High 1-B

A single Universe was described as infinite dimensional in through the gates of the silver key: https://imgur.io/a/S5EnWPz

Higher Dimensions are stated to be infinitely superior to lower dimensions: "Then the waves increased in strength, and sought to improve his understanding, reconciling him to the multiform entity of which his present fragment was an infinitesimal part. They told him that every figure of space is but the result of the intersection by a plane of some corresponding figure of one more dimension—as a square is cut from a cube or a circle from a sphere. The cube and sphere, of three dimensions, are thus cut from corresponding forms of four dimensions that men know only through guesses and dreams; and these in turn are cut from forms of five dimensions, and so on up to the dizzy and reachless heights of archetypal infinity."

Dreamlands = High 1-A

The Dreamland is non physical structure mentioned in numerous stories and is just above the physical Universe as mentioned in Hypnos:

"Of our studies it is impossible to speak, since they held so slight a connexion with anything of the world as living men conceive it. They were of that vaster and more appalling universe of dim entity and consciousness which lies deeper than matter, time, and space, and whose existence we suspect only in certain forms of sleep—those rare dreams beyond dreams which come never to common men, and but once or twice in the lifetime of imaginative men. The cosmos of our waking knowledge, born from such an universe as a bubble is born from the pipe of a jester, touches it only as such a bubble may touch its sardonic source when sucked back by the jester’s whim. Men of learning suspect it little, and ignore it mostly. Wise men have interpreted dreams, and the gods have laughed. One man with Oriental eyes has said that all time and space are relative, and men have laughed. But even that man with Oriental eyes has done no more than suspect. I had wished and tried to do more than suspect, and my friend had tried and partly succeeded. Then we both tried together, and with exotic drugs courted terrible and forbidden dreams in the tower studio chamber of the old manor-house in hoary Kent."

The Dreamlands contain infinite hierarchy of metaphysical realms called "vacua" which there are an infinite amount of them:

"There was a night when winds from unknown spaces whirled us irresistibly into limitless vacua beyond all thought and entity. Perceptions of the most maddeningly untransmissible sort thronged upon us; perceptions of infinity which at the time convulsed us with joy, yet which are now partly lost to my memory and partly incapable of presentation to others. Viscous obstacles were clawed through in rapid succession, and at length I felt that we had been borne to realms of greater remoteness than any we had previously known. My friend was vastly in advance as we plunged into this awesome ocean of virgin aether, and I could see the sinister exultation on his floating, luminous, too youthful memory-face. Suddenly that face became dim and quickly disappeared, and in a brief space I found myself projected against an obstacle which I could not penetrate. It was like the others, yet incalculably denser; a sticky, clammy mass, if such terms can be applied to analogous qualities in a non-material sphere."

Azathoth's Court: Higher into High 1-A

Said to be genuine infinity:
"Their main immediate abode is a still undiscovered and almost lightless planet at the very edge of our solar system—beyond Neptune, and the ninth in distance from the sun. It is, as we have inferred, the object mystically hinted at as “Yuggoth” in certain ancient and forbidden writings; and it will soon be the scene of a strange focussing of thought upon our world in an effort to facilitate mental rapport. I would not be surprised if astronomers became sufficiently sensitive to these thought-currents to discover Yuggoth when the Outer Ones wish them to do so. But Yuggoth, of course, is only the stepping-stone. The main body of the beings inhabits strangely organised abysses wholly beyond the utmost reach of any human imagination. The space-time globule which we recognise as the totality of all cosmic entity is only an atom in the genuine infinity which is theirs. And as much of this infinity as any human brain can hold is eventually to be opened up to me, as it has been to not more than fifty other men since the human race has existed."

Is the realm where no Dreams reach:
"There were, in such voyages, incalculable local dangers; as well as that shocking final peril which gibbers unmentionably outside the ordered universe, where no dreams reach; that last amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the centre of all infinity—the boundless daemon-sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin, monotonous whine of accursed flutes; to which detestable pounding and piping dance slowly, awkwardly, and absurdly the gigantic ultimate gods, the blind, voiceless, tenebrous, mindless Other Gods whose soul and messenger is the crawling chaos Nyarlathotep."

I think this is enough proof of Court of Azathoth to be transended off of Dreamlands.

Infinite Hierarchy of Gates = 0

There is infinite amount of Gates: "On earth, on October 7, 1883, a little boy named Randolph Carter was leaving the Snake-Den in the hushed evening light and running down the rocky slope and through the twisted-boughed orchard toward his Uncle Christopher’s house in the hills beyond Arkham—yet at that same moment, which was also somehow in the earthly year of 1928, a vague shadow not less Randolph Carter was sitting on a pedestal among the Ancient Ones in earth’s trans-dimensional extension. Here, too, was a third Randolph Carter in the unknown and formless cosmic abyss beyond the Ultimate Gate. And elsewhere, in a chaos of scenes whose infinite multiplicity and monstrous diversity brought him close to the brink of madness, were a limitless confusion of beings which he knew were as much himself as the local manifestation now beyond the Ultimate Gate. There were “Carters” in settings belonging to every known and suspected age of earth’s history, and to remoter ages of earthly entity transcending knowledge, suspicion, and credibility."

The Ultimate gate = 0
is the last Gate

Ultimate Void = 0

Where the archetypes live. No, not the Outer Gods.
And can manipulate the whole cosmology at will:
"After an impressive pause the waves continued, saying that what the denizens of few-dimensioned zones call change is merely a function of their consciousness, which views the external world from various cosmic angles. As the shapes produced by the cutting of a cone seem to vary with the angles of cutting—being circle, ellipse, parabola, or hyperbola according to that angle, yet without any change in the cone itself—so do the local aspects of an unchanged and endless reality seem to change with the cosmic angle of regarding. To this variety of angles of consciousness the feeble beings of the inner worlds are slaves, since with rare exceptions they cannot learn to control them. Only a few students of forbidden things have gained inklings of this control, and have thereby conquered time and change. But the entities outside the Gates command all angles, and view the myriad parts of the cosmos in terms of fragmentary, change-involving perspective, or of the changeless totality beyond perspective, in accordance with their will."

The Supreme Archetype = 0
Is the supreme entity of the void:

"It was an All-in-One and One-in-All of limitless being and self—not merely a thing of one Space-Time continuum, but allied to the ultimate animating essence of existence’s whole unbounded sweep—the last, utter sweep which has no confines and which outreaches fancy and mathematics alike. It was perhaps that which certain secret cults of earth have whispered of as YOG-SOTHOTH, and which has been a deity under other names; that which the crustaceans of Yuggoth worship as the Beyond-One, and which the vaporous brains of the spiral nebulae know by an untranslatable Sign—yet in a flash the Carter-facet realised how slight and fractional all these conceptions are."

The tiers are already there, but just for you, it's like this:

The physical Universe = low 2-C to High 1-B

The Dreamlands = High 1-A

Ultimate Chaos = High 1-A

Infinite Gates = 0

Ultimate Gate = 0

Ultimate Void = 0

Supreme Archetype = 0

As for a quick summary, it isn't much so i'll just say this here,

Azathoth's ultimate Chaos and Yog Sothoth's Ultimate Void aren't the same thing. That's basically the main point of the thread.

I'm neutral though I do have some problems:

This doesn't seem to be a place or step at all, it's Yog-Sothoth warning Carter before he gives him his boon.

"The veil still unrent before your eyes" is just metaphor, as "Seeing behind the veil" is common vernacular.
That's fair.

Although the veil is still mentioned in the same story even before that:
“And while there are those,” the mad Arab had written, “who have dared to seek glimpses beyond the Veil, and to accept HIM as a Guide, they would have been more prudent had they avoided commerce with HIM; for it is written in the Book of Thoth how terrific is the price of a single glimpse. Nor may those who pass ever return, for in the Vastnesses transcending our world are Shapes of darkness that seize and bind. The Affair that shambleth about in the night, the Evil that defieth the Elder Sign, the Herd that stand watch at the secret portal each tomb is known to have, and that thrive on that which groweth out of the tenants within—all these Blacknesses are lesser than HE Who guardeth the Gateway; HE Who will guide the rash one beyond all the worlds into the Abyss of unnamable Devourers. For HE is’UMR AT-TAWIL, the Most Ancient One, which the scribe rendereth as THE PROLONGED OF LIFE.”

But i guess you could still argue that "the veil" is referring to something beyond reality in this case but dosen't particularly matters.

I can't seem to find any hierarchy here though.

The second passage seems to talk about an experience they were swept away into a void and had encountered obstacles that were difficult to get through. Eventually, the friend disappeared, and the narrator hit an even more impenetrable obstacle.

I dont really see any mentions of deeper infinities or an infinite layered dream hierarchy. Also, there doesn't really seem to be a reason why Dreamlands are High 1-A, it just seems to encompass these “Dreams" however, i dont see any inaccessible transcendence.

Need more clarifications

I can't seem to find any hierarchy here though.
It mentions "limitless vacua beyond all thought and entity" which are described as more real.
They are also described as 'obstacles'.
Also, more proof for infinite hierarchy of realms before the Ultimate Chaos:
"Thick though the rushing nightmare that clutched his senses, Randolph Carter could turn and move. He could move, and if he chose he could leap off the evil shantak that bore him hurtlingly doomward at the orders of Nyarlathotep. He could leap off and dare those depths of night that yawned interminably down, those depths of fear whose terrors yet could not exceed the nameless doom that lurked waiting at chaos’ core. He could turn and move and leap—he could—he would—he would—Off that vast hippocephalic abomination leaped the doomed and desperate dreamer, and down through endless voids of sentient blackness he fell. Aeons reeled, universes died and were born again, stars became nebulae and nebulae became stars, and still Randolph Carter fell through those endless voids of sentient blackness."

"Perceptions of the most maddeningly untransmissible sort thronged upon us; perceptions of infinity which at the time convulsed us with joy, yet which are now partly lost to my memory and partly incapable of presentation to others."

It literally talks about how their perception unfold entirely new perceptions of infinity.

Not to mention they are also described as dreams beyond dreams .

Reluctantly agree. However, are we sure this is an infinite hierarchy?

The realms were stated to be "more remote" than any the pair had explored until then, which, considering the vacua described are aspatial, suggests that this remoteness is in relation to their nature as transcendental worlds.

I think this only qualifies for Infinite 1-A considering Those vacua are just Aleph as they are only above physical universe.

Azathoth's Court: Higher into High 1-A

Said to be ultimate infinity and even genuine infinity:

"I have said that there were things in some of Akeley’s letters—especially the second and most voluminous one—which I would not dare to quote or even form into words on paper. This hesitancy applies with still greater force to the things I heard whispered that evening in the darkened room among the lonely haunted hills. Of the extent of the cosmic horrors unfolded by that raucous voice I cannot even hint. He had known hideous things before, but what he had learned since making his pact with the Outside Things was almost too much for sanity to bear. Even now I absolutely refuse to believe what he implied about the constitution of ultimate infinity, the juxtaposition of dimensions, and the frightful position of our known cosmos of space and time in the unending chain of linked cosmos-atoms which makes up the immediate super-cosmos of curves, angles, and material and semi-material electronic organisation."

Is the realm where no Dreams reach:

I agree with this.

This is only infinite High 1-A considering that each gate is inaccessible cardinals.

Yeah, this is tier 0 alright.

Yes, as shown in the quotes but here's another one: “The other gods! The other gods! The gods of the outer hells that guard the feeble gods of earth! . . . Look away! . . . Go back! . . . Do not see! . . . Do not see! . . . The vengeance of the infinite abysses . . . That cursed, that damnable pit . . . Merciful gods of earth, I am falling into the sky!”

Not sure what you mean, yes those vacua are 1-A. Infinity of those together are 1-A+.

The final obstical is stated to be "incalculably denser than the others" which transcends Infinity 1-A+ hierarchy of levels making it High 1-A.
This is only infinite High 1-A considering that each gate is inaccessible cardinals.
No, not really. Inaccessible Cardinals are never mentioned in the verse so that's completely moot point.

Not mentioned but must have its equivalent to reaching High 1-A.

Yeah. But the final obstical is still part of the Dreamlands, so the Dream structure as a whole would scale to High 1-A.

I mean, the Dreamlands and the Court of Azathoth already reaches High 1-A so they would be inaccessible cardinal. The Gates are far beyond that.

Thanks for your explanation, I agree then.

I want kingpin and Matthew to know this. And I'm neutral at dream land because vacua is pretty vague.

It's the same thing. Beyond the Veil is just a phrase associated with the unknown or unknown knowledge.

For example: "Beyond the Veil: Male-Female Dynamics in Muslim Society", "Beyond the Veil: Essays in the Dialectical Style of Socrates", etc.

It's just a term.

The veil here is the veil in the sense of "veil of reality"
Like in Islam, where reality is just a projection of Allah that is separated by a veil (Al-Hijab). If the veils are revealed, the entire reality (Al-Alam) will be burned by his light (Nurullah).

Also, just to 100% confirm that Hypnos did in fact go to the Throne of Azathoth, in poem called "nyarlathotep" the vacua are still mentioned before you access the Void.

"half-seen columns of unsanctified temples that rest on nameless rocks beneath space and reach up to dizzy vacua above the spheres of light and darkness. And through this revolting graveyard of the universe the muffled, maddening beating of drums, and thin, monotonous whine of blasphemous flutes from inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond Time; the detestable pounding and piping whereunto dance slowly, awkwardly, and absurdly the gigantic, tenebrous ultimate gods the blind, voiceless, mindless gargoyles whose soul is Nyarlathotep."

Neutral on this.

But the whole infinite dimensions does not sound like it a characteristic of a single universe, the various paragraphs above and below of that quote on how Carter has gained perspective into infinity of angles that never seen beyond the "world of man and of gods of man", this sounds more like the infinite dimensions are spanning the entire cosmology below the realm of archetypes ("space outside dimensions") than otherwise, as the three-dimensional world was already described as part of the "wholeness" reached by the First Gate.

The waves surged forth again, and Carter knew that the BEING had heard. And now there poured from that limitless MIND a flood of knowledge and explanation which opened new vistas to the seeker, and prepared him for such a grasp of the cosmos as he had never hoped to possess. He was told how childish and limited is the notion of a tri-dimensional world, and what an infinity of directions there are besides the known directions of up-down, forward-backward, right-left. He was shewn the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little gods of earth, with their petty, human interests and connexions—their hatreds, rages, loves, and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice, and their demands for faith contrary to reason and Nature.

While most of the impressions translated themselves to Carter as words, there were others to which other senses gave interpretation. Perhaps with eyes and perhaps with imagination he perceived that he was in a region of dimensions beyond those conceivable to the eye and brain of man. He saw now, in the brooding shadows of that which had been first a vortex of power and then an illimitable void, a sweep of creation that dizzied his senses. From some inconceivable vantage-point he looked upon prodigious forms whose multiple extensions transcended any conception of being, size, and boundaries which his mind had hitherto been able to hold, despite a lifetime of cryptical study. He began to understand dimly why there could exist at the same time the little boy Randolph Carter in the Arkham farmhouse in 1883, the misty form on the vaguely hexagonal pillar beyond the First Gate, the fragment now facing the PRESENCE in the limitless abyss, and all the other “Carters” his fancy or perception envisaged.

Then the waves increased in strength, and sought to improve his understanding, reconciling him to the multiform entity of which his present fragment was an infinitesimal part. They told him that every figure of space is but the result of the intersection by a plane of some corresponding figure of one more dimension—as a square is cut from a cube or a circle from a sphere. The cube and sphere, of three dimensions, are thus cut from corresponding forms of four dimensions that men know only through guesses and dreams; and these in turn are cut from forms of five dimensions, and so on up to the dizzy and reachless heights of archetypal infinity. The world of men and of the gods of men is merely an infinitesimal phase of an infinitesimal thing—the three-dimensional phase of that small wholeness reached by the First Gate, where ’Umr at-Tawil dictates dreams to the Ancient Ones. Though men hail it as reality and brand thoughts of its many-dimensioned original as unreality, it is in truth the very opposite. That which we call substance and reality is shadow and illusion, and that which we call shadow and illusion is substance and reality.

Time, the waves went on, is motionless, and without beginning or end. That it has motion, and is the cause of change, is an illusion. Indeed, it is itself really an illusion, for except to the narrow sight of beings in limited dimensions there are no such things as past, present, and future. Men think of time only because of what they call change, yet that too is illusion. All that was, and is, and is to be, exists simultaneously.

These revelations came with a godlike solemnity which left Carter unable to doubt. Even though they lay almost beyond his comprehension, he felt that they must be true in the light of that final cosmic reality which belies all local perspectives and narrow partial views; and he was familiar enough with profound speculations to be free from the bondage of local and partial conceptions. Had his whole quest not been based upon a faith in the unreality of the local and partial?

After an impressive pause the waves continued, saying that what the denizens of few-dimensioned zones call change is merely a function of their consciousness, which views the external world from various cosmic angles. But the entities outside the Gates command all angles, and view the myriad parts of the cosmos in terms of fragmentary, change-involving perspective, or of the changeless totality beyond perspective, in accordance with their will.

As the waves paused again, Carter began to comprehend, vaguely and terrifiedly, the ultimate background of that riddle of lost individuality which had at first so horrified him. His intuition pieced together the fragments of revelation, and brought him closer and closer to a grasp of the secret. He understood that much of the frightful revelation would have come upon him—splitting up his ego amongst myriads of earthly counterparts—inside the First Gate, had not the magic of ’Umr at-Tawil kept it from him in order that he might use the Silver Key with precision for the Ultimate Gate’s opening. Anxious for clearer knowledge, he sent out waves of thought, asking more of the exact relationship between his various facets—the fragment now beyond the Ultimate Gate, the fragment still on the quasi-hexagonal pedestal beyond the First Gate, the boy of 1883, the man of 1928, the various ancestral beings who had formed his heritage and the bulwark of his ego, and the nameless denizens of the other aeons and other worlds which that first hideous flash of ultimate perception had identified with him. Slowly the waves of the BEING surged out in reply, trying to make plain what was almost beyond the reach of an earthly mind.

This quote from dreams in the witch house clearly states dimensions can be contained within a single space-time continuum, which in Lovecraft's stories is a single universe.

"Any being from any part of three-dimensional space could probably survive in the fourth dimension; and its survival of the second stage would depend upon what alien part of three-dimensional space it might select for its re-entry. Denizens of some planets might be able to live on certain others—even planets belonging to other galaxies, or to similar-dimensional phases of other space-time continua—though of course there must be vast numbers of mutually uninhabitable even though mathematically juxtaposed bodies or zones of space. It was also possible that the inhabitants of a given dimensional realm could survive entry to many unknown and incomprehensible realms of additional or indefinitely multiplied dimensions—be they within or outside the given space-time continuum—and that the converse would be likewise true."

Also no, this quote "The world of men and of the gods of men is merely an infinitesimal phase of an infinitesimal thing—the three-dimensional phase of that small wholeness reached by the First Gate"
Isn't saying the First Gate is only beyond 3 Dimensions. It's saying that the world of man and gods is "small wholeness" out of an infinite amount of dimensional phases reached by the First Gate.

Also, this is already accepted on their profiles. So not really something to argue about.

I knew i should leave out the tiering for another thread because people will start to derail with something that is already on the wiki and accepted. And that's exactly what happened.

Nothing about a spacetime continuum contains multiple dimensions (our spacetime continuum have three dimensions already), but not every single spacetime continuum houses a vast number of dimensions, somehow the word "additional" was always left out for some reason.

Yeah not sure what that proves. My point still stands.

Also, just to be clear, 'additional' in this context just means dimensions outside of the main 3 dimensions. Not that you can physically add more dimensions into the universe or something.

You are saying a single universe has infinite dimensions, when the quote rom The Dreams in the Witch House suggests numerous spacetime continuums have different number of dimensions (even "indefinitely" is as clear as it is), i.e not every single universe has the same amount of dimensions.

How does that debunk universe having infinite dimensions? You're just saying one universe has multiple dimensions but that dosen't mean one can't have infinite amount of them.

In the whisperer of darkness it's shown that a single "super cosmos" contains infinite universes and dimensions:
