Item #: SCP-256-VS
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-256-VS is to be kept under a sterilized, 10 x 10 x 10 meters concrete containment chamber. No living being is allowed to enter its chamber under any circumstances. The containment chamber has to be guarded at all time to prevent breaches. Due to its memetic potential, anyone possessing knowledge about its effects or appearance is to be terminated or administrated Class-A amnesiacs. This includes any personnel of the Foundation. If the need for deeper information about its effects arises, only one (1) person at a time is allowed to get ahold of them, and amnesiacs shall be administrated at most 2 minutes after the information is received. If administration proves impossible, immediate termination is required. No new non-living objects are allowed within 15 meters of the containment chamber (see Incident 2).
Description: The physical appearance SCP-256-VS varies at an interval of 0.3 to 10 seconds. It closest resembles graphical glitches in computer programs, represented as chaotic boxes with no recognizable patterns. Occasionally, it will take the appearance of fossils of previously unknown species of animals. One resembles a species of the order of flying reptiles Pterosauria, while the second resembles a bipedal member of the Trilobita class of arthropods. It will also take the form of a spherical black globe, with a pattern resembling a smiling human face.
The object is capable of movement and appears to possess some degree of intelligence, although its exact degree is unknown and has been mostly described as primal. If presented with a threat coming from any beings, living or not, it will replicate through various means of attack. The two most common being a jet of highly pressurized water and an areal full-body charge. It won't, however, attack if the source is unknown, implying it possesses enough sapience to make a distinction between another being and natural threats.
The most noticeable attribute of SCP-256-VS is its effect on local reality. Though not all of them have been studied yet, its sheer existence will cause numerous effects on its surrounding. See Addendum for a full list of all of its currently known effects.
Though these effects have been initially triggered by SCP-256-VS itself, further analyzes showed that any sentient being visualizing in any way SCP-256-VS' abilities will replicate the effect within 2 minutes. These will have the full effects of SCP-256-VS' original effect. As such, it is imperative to keep away any knowledge about its true capacities to avoid any disaster.
SCP-256-VS has first come into the Foundation's knowledge, the 28th of September of 1998. The entity brought suspicions to itself after a young boy aged ÔûêÔûê was found deceased near the coastline of Tokyo. The autopsy led the Foundation to believe that the boy died of a high-pressure jet of liquid through his skull. ÔûêÔûêÔûê days following this incident, SCP-256-VS had been contained after ÔûêÔûê Foundation casualties and an unknown amount of civilian casualties. The object was studied for Ôûê months before being moved to Site-1Ôûê.
Addendum: List of incidents involving SCP-256-VS.
Incident 1: Class D ordered to approach SCP-256-VS. Upon being approximately 10 meters away from SCP-256-VS, subject collapsed on the ground and started convulsing. After SCP-256-VS moved beyond the 10 meters distance, subject stopped convulsing and managed to get back up again. Subject reported having all of their movements stripped away, despite staying conscious, and hearing a "demonic and headache-inducing" tune all through the process. Although the subject only collapsed for 14 seconds, the subject described the experience as having lasted hours. No further anomalous were detected in subject's behavior following the events.
Incident 2: Upon the initial containment of SCP-256-VS, several objects, later noted to be objects found in SCP-256-VS' containment chamber, appeared around the chamber. Each individual object had a number of duplicates adding up to 256, including the original. This appeared to happen to any item introduced in a range of about 15 meters around the chamber. If any of the duplicates were to be removed from the range or damaged beyond recognition, another one will be created to replace it. Upon SCP-256-VS being moved to Site-1Ôûê, its chamber was completely emptied. This caused the creation of 255 completely identical chambers around Site-1Ôûê (Minus SCP-256-VS itself). Any object found in the initial chamber will also be replicated into the duplicates. To prevent overflow of potentially anomalous objects, the introduction of any new object within 15 meters of the chamber should come in groups of 256 or higher to avoid replication. Propositions to use this effect to reproduce important objects for the Foundation's benefits have been rejected.
Incident 3: Doctor ÔûêÔûêÔûê, in the process of discussing with a guard, found itself faced with half a dozen (6) clones of itself around the containment chamber of SCP-256-VS. While these clones appeared to be perfect physically, yet had a significantly odd behavior. They appeared to walk around, even going through walls, in a seemingly random pattern. Although they reacted normally to stimuli, their speech pattern was highly irregular. They sometimes talked perfect English, albeit their sentences were completely unrelated to the subject at hand. Occasionally, their words weren't recognizable at all, producing electronic sounds that are normally impossible for humans to produce. The clones were shortly terminated. Autopsies showed no difference to regular humans in any way. The bodies were incinerated to avoid further anomalies.
Incident 4: After what was theorized to be a containment breach by a bacterium in the initial containment chamber, the surrounding area started to behave strangely. The material making up chamber randomly switched to other kinds of matter, including wood, water, stone and human body parts. This effect soon spread to the surrounding areas. Analysis showed that space-time itself seemed to be affected. The incident resulted in Ôûê casualties and a containment breach of the SCP object itself. SCP-256-VS was re-contained and moved to Site-1Ôûê, and its former containment area was restricted from any further interventions.
Incident 5: In an unrelated area of Site-1Ôûê, effects similar to those of Incident 4 above happened. More than ÔûêÔûêÔûê meters square of terrain was affected, destroying Ôûê SCP objects, including SCP-ÔûêÔûêÔûê and the containment breach of Ôûê SCP objects. The surviving Doctor ÔûêÔûêÔûêÔûê reported having thought about the effects of Incident 4 at the moment of Incident 5. SCP-256 was immediately classified as a memetic threat, and amnesiacs were administrated to all individuals possessing knowledge about its effects.
