Metroid V: To Infinity and Beyond

Someone seems to have broken the review embargo and has uploaded the footage of them playing a preview version of Metroid Prime 4 Beyond. The original video got taken down, but it's been reuploaded elsewhere, so beware of spoilers, I guess.
Do you know if they said it was good or not?

You're welcome. I haven't watched the footage yet myself, even though I have the video.
I think the embargo might be down? There's been a few articles popping up. I'll admit that if what they're saying is true and indicative of the entirety of the game (since they've only had a few hours to play) it's a bit... alarming, and it compounds my previous concerns. I won't be referencing anything from these in this post though so you shouldn't worry about spoilers.

The trailer opens with what seems to be a Lamorn artifact either stolen by the pirates or in study by the federation activating and transporting Samus to Viewros. This I think reinforces the time travel theory. - before that there's a brief scuffle between her and Sylux - I wonder if her dodging his beam could be calced, we know it's a neutrino beam thanks to Hunters but IDK if that implies any kind of speed.

We have a confirmation the spiky towers from the previous trailer are a factory so maybe they are Lamorn after all, they look a little less evil from within. It's also very likely that the frozen lab is NOT the same area (though they might be connected) so my theory of it maybe being a future version is wrong. Judging by E-Tank count the four areas presented here all seem to be in gameplay order and they're all fairly early into the game. Interestingly at around 1:38 we can see some yellow and red dots on the minimap. Those might be markers, we can see they're a function when they show us the map menu right after.

It's really funny how when they say "the maps are maze-like" at 1:40 the tower map is literally just a straight line. The Volt Forge map does at least seem a bit more interesting and is notably separated into different "areas", one of which is still not uncovered. Probably just a feature to make the map more readable admittedly. There's also a radio function on the map, which... we'll get to. Finally we get to see the menu icons, there's one for Samus which probably lets you see your items, one maybe for psychic powers or the bike? One for the logbook, options, and then finally amiibo.

At 1:46 we see some more of the "abhorrent alien creatures" from the March trailer, but it's clearly a different subspecies, they're bulkier and white instead of yellow. I assume they've got some importance. Then Samus fights a humanoid robot, and we see an ice weapon in her inventory. Probably just the Ice Beam or Missiles.

It's funny how Samus does this every time she scans something. Not much to say about the Lamorn text other than it seems they're a spiritual culture (kind of unsurprising, given the Chozo, Luminoth and Alimbics all were). More interestingly is that we're told their civilization crumbled, and that it's going to be an active mystery. Sylux presumably didn't do that, since it was a while ago, so there's gonna be more than just him as a threat I assume. Next shots show us they were doing DNA analysis and harvesting Green Energy from lava... whatever that is. We see Samus meeting with a Lamorn spirit(?) through scanning, and going back to the March trailer, the Lamorn I assumed was material is actually a little bit transparent, so it might be they've physically gone extinct and are just living on as psychic ghosts or something.

"Powers and Abilities"? Is this a VSBW reference?? We get a first look at the Beyond Suit Morph Ball and it looks fairly neat I suppose. There's a brief warning sign that pops up at 2:43, maybe that points out hazards? The psychic abilities come from the Lamorn as we kind of all expected I suppose but the effects are very pretty. We see the Psychic Glove for the first time here, seems to just be a way to interact with the environment. It also works as a grapple hook, and Samus gets the ability to reveal invisible objects. Them trying to make "the ability to jump" sound exciting is really funny though.

The desert is called Sol Valley and I suppose as expect does connect the various areas. Really weird how they say Vi-O-La was "left behind by some ancient civilization". Is this not the Lamorn? Sure sounds like them, but then why not say it's just them. We see Samus has a cool spin disc move on top of the bike and then she smashes some crystals, gaining some energy that is almost assuredly the "Green Energy" mentioned early on.

It's very unexpected how you'll be rescuing various Galactic Federation troopers throughout the game, and even fight side by side with them. The dorky looking one is shown getting hurt and later on at 5:48 we see that their name tags are also health bars. I don't think these guys can permadie since they're story relevant so best case they get knocked out and leave, worst case them dying is a game over. There's a lot of voiced characters with unique faces here so it's not going to just be like MP3 where they can help you once or twice, this seems like an important plot thing. We see the dork is named "Mackenzie" and has a wrench icon, a sniper with a crosshair is named "Tokabi", the power armor one is named "VUE-995" which makes it sound like they're actually a robot, and then "Duke" and "Armstrong" just have badges implying their higher rank. I assume Duke will be the leader. It's easy to miss but Samus gets an electric weapon here, and it doesn't look like the Wave Beam at all.

This story setup seems very... non-Metroid. I had fears that Beyond would go more towards the "linear action shooter with an exploration side" direction and with all of these characters it seems to be the case. We'll see but I dunno, I really don't want some guy quipping in my ear throughout the whole playthrough, though the silver lining is that Federation worldbuilding has been disappointingly sparse in the series so far and this might change that. We see some more variations of the "abhorrent creatures" here and notably a rocket barrage (maybe a trap set by Mackenzie?) blasting a buttload of them, which seems to confirm they're plot-relevant. Samus notably never speaks throughout all of these scenes which is a little bizarre but in-character I suppose. I am literally willing to bet money that the "I wanna see my family again" guy dies, it's basically guaranteed LOL.

... Anyways, at 5:46 there's some big guy jumping out of the sand hopefully confirming some decent enemy variety in the desert, but also a lot of easier to miss stuff. Tons of green dots, whatever they mean, on the radar, and several different icons on the minimap. Then there's a huge, clearly boss-like alien named Phenoros who notably has a green glow similar to the Green Energy crystals. Then we see an earlier boss named Xelios which is... also glowing green, as is the chamber that Sylux crawls out of right after. Maybe the green stuff is empowering him? Strangely he's holding his head so either it has side effects or he was forced to do this.

At 6.18 we see the electric beam is consuming psychic(?) energy and that it seemingly works like a missile, given Samus can just shoot normal power beam shots while it's "equipped". The game running at 4k 60fps or 1080p 120 fps is a hell of a flex and makes me maybe hope that it won't be too laggy on Switch 1? A man can dream. An interesting thing to note is that while this is showcased we can see that Samus is missing a lot of the upgrades she had in these areas before, despite even having more E-Tanks. I don't think this is really indicative of anything though. At 6:55 we see that the telekinetic grappling hook works while in Morph Ball which is neat.

What I find really weird is the amiibo stuff. Samus' grants a "temporary health shield and more" whatever that means, Vi-O-La is skins and... more, again... and Sylux grants "Easier access to an in-game cinematic". I have no clue what that could possibly mean but at least it's not as dumb as Samus Returns' hardest difficulty being amiibo-locked. Oh, and more, of course.

I dunno, if I have to be honest this trailer made me more apprehensive about the game than anything. How do you guys feel?

I'm very disappointed that the desert region is confirmed to be a hub area. Sick of hubs in my Metroid games and wish that they would go back to the Prime 1 design where everything was interconnected. I also share everyone's worry about chatty Fed troopers, and from what I've seen their dialogue is pretty cringe. This preview has definitely made me more wary, though I wasn't as super hyped about this game already as some people were.

Talked about it with DDM, the characters really remind of the Metroid Prime 2 manga and Other M for better and worse.

Hoping they aren't as isolation breaking as the AU was in Prime 3.

I'm wondering if Armstrong is a reference to the Blood of the Chozo?

I'll admit that the dialogue from Miles MacKenzie has me worried in the event that the other Federation Troops are like him. But I'm optimistic his role is simply reserved for the beginning area of Viewros, and the other Federation Troops are much more tolerable than he is. In that case, I'm actually quite interested in the dialogue and might find it a bit refreshing. And worst-case scenario, if they are just as annoying, then hopefully there will be an option included that allows you to disable the voices of NPC dialogue.

I’m excitedly nervous for this, the game visually looks incredible (at least on switch 2), but the desert hub world looks like it lacks much to do, and the federation troopers could constantly yap throughout the whole game which could be annoying.

This series really could've rivaled Megaman

I was actually being serious there, what was wrong with that statement
Doesn’t help that you literally went into a discussion thread solely about Metroid for the whole purpose of instigating, but whatever. But real quick before a debate starts, how many Megaman games have you played (and which ones), and how many Metroid games have you played (and which ones)?

Mega Man (classic) is a series of linear side-scrolling platformers focused on difficult platforming - its design is extremely iterative and the games are fairly small in scope
Metroid is a series of 2D or 3D games with shooter/run and gun elements but focused on exploration and character progression - its design tends to be transformative, with the majority of its games trying to do something different from their predecessors.

That the objective rational reason why what you said was silly. The subjective reason is that metroid owns the SHIT OUT OF MEGA MAN LMAOOOO IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE LOOOL

Why would I play Megaman games?

Circling back to a more serious discussion like the mature, sophiscated gentleman that I am. I do hope there's more to the psychic abilities than they've shown off so far, like I'm 90% sure there is, but so far they don't seem to really be that exciting to me. They don't seem bad or clunky but they just lack a bit of oomth to them.

More like MIDga BUM.
I will hunt you down

I don't necessarily mind the lack of impact when it comes to the Psychic Abilities, but I think if there are any abilities that appear that are meant to be a showcase of strength, there should be a real sense of power behind them. I think the clip of Samus using it to create a path and propel herself forward with the Morph Ball was pretty impactful feeling-wise, but that's about it until then.

Using it as a grappling hook is really neat, though I wonder if that'll replace the functionality of the Grapple Beam? We'll have to see, ig

You might right that the embargo is down since quite a few places, including Gizmodo, have put up reviews of their demo experience (I'm just assuming gameplay footage still might not be allowed). Speaking of Gizmodo, I only skimmed their article, but the reviewer seemed pretty happy with the experience (at the very least, the Galactic Federation Troopers don't seem to annoy him).

Edit: Never mind, it seems videos are allowed too.

According to NintendoLife's pinned comment, the people playing the preview of the game were not privvy to the information in the overview trailer that released today, including the information that there are multiple Troopers Samus will interact with, not just Miles, so keep that in mind when you read and/or watch people's preview reviews.
