Via Aizen casting Kyoga Suigetsu on him, before he unlocked the Almighty after a 1,000 years. Having the power to control the opponents five senses, Aizen was able to trick his visions of the future forcing him to see a different future and thus choosing the wrong ones, only then was Ichigo was able to cut him ih half from behind and kill him. But then Yhwach revived himself only to be hit by an arrow in the back, made from the silver of his own Holy Light ability which stop his powers for an instant giving Ichigo the chance to kill him again, before all of his powers came back. 10 years later Yhwach's power returns, and before it could do anything it was either destroy or absorb by Ichigo's son. That part was left for the interpretation of the reader's point of view.
