Meruem is a very good character for a number of reasons. Main one being his character arc. Although he isn't a unique character he's possibly the best take on his character arc in shounen.

Even for fictional media standards, this list is going to subjective AF!.

Anyway I guess I'll start with Meruem for Low 7-B.

EDiT: yay my first ninja'ed!

Alright Meruem for the tiers he is in because his change from being a sociopath to a more emotional character was well executed. Also he is defeat was well written and he wasn't made weaker for plot purpose. Finally he is probably one of the few villains you feel bad for.

O h n o

I kinda want to put Kryte up for every tier he is in, because he is a good comedy character with real development that made for some fun and interesting episodes. For one, I really liked the concept of silicon heaven

Also Michael (The Good Place) goes without saying (except for the fact that he did indeed talk about his character just then, albeit it briefly)

Ezio Auditore da Firenze for 9-A

I really can't think of a better written character. The 3 games were telling his life, and through his entire life he was turning slowly from a young womanizer to a man of such wisdom and experience as his life was progressing and after his tragedy turned into light. I learnt more about life and philosophy from this fictional character than school has ever taught me tbh.

Meruem's character arc from bloodthirsty and amoral to compassionate and understanding isn't a unique character arc. It's just the way it is executed that makes it stand out from the rest. He's of the highest quality in this regard. The change in character is subtle and smooth. We can understand where the amorality of Meruem comes from because as readers/watches we're exposed to him and his every nuace and this is why he's extremely popular because he's a relatable villain. At first he was quite a naive character believe it or not, one who was born into a role and took it with both hands however as he was exposed to humanity and its different facets he started to wonder about his existence.

Tonally he fits so well into the Ant Arc. Togashi is known for tonal shifting across various arcs. The Ant Arc being the darkess undoubtedly. There is a build up of tension towards Meruem's birth through use of foreshadowing and heightened sense of foreboding. The Royal Guards are key to the build up of the King especially Pitou due to how incredibly sinister and powerful they are.

The King's birth is crazy because antagonistic characters like the Chimera Ant Queen we immediately sympathize with. The King brings out the humanity in the Chimera Ants. Meruem's name literally means "the light that shines over everything" immediately becomes ironic. At this point Meruem is just a powerhouse and doesn't care about anything except it. Respecting the strong, despising and terrorizing the weak. At this point he was merely one-dimensional but obviously menacing and intriguing but conforming to his character archetype. Komugi is his catalyst for change.

Meruem attempts to expand his power into that of the mental. He destroys everyone who comes into his way after a time proving to be mentally the superior to all creatures....except from Komugi.

Due to the vastness of Nen, Komugi likely has an unconscious condition wherein if she loses a game she will die. Therefore she is unbeatable in Gungi and forces Meruem to realize that there are other absolutes other than power and for the first time he is bested in something. Meruem's care for Komugi is a perculiar aspect to his character because of the way he perceives that care. He believes it to be interest in her abilities but being the King he can't comprehend it being anything else. Later he after questioning his Guards he goes to kill Komugi because his character has almost regressed back into the original. He wants to display his might. However after seeing her being attacked by a bird, he almost instinctevly kills it and tells her she is a special guest whilst being unable to comprehend these emotions building up within him. After this Meruem becomes nihilistic and disillusioned with his destiny. All of it is monotony to him now heavily contrasting to his intial philosophy.

Meruem remains in a dualistic state of Ant instincts and human nature. He can't comprehend his human emotions but later we see he does. However this stasis was changed as the narrative progressed. The Invasion of the Palace.

After Komugi almost dies the scene of the compassionate King is one of the key moments in the entirety of HxH. Netero and Zeno were baffled by what they saw with Zeno even saying "This isn't what I signed up for".

Netero and Meruem have a psychological battle before their actually battle. Meruem's POV on humans has changed from "I will rule and kill all" to "Human with worth I respect". Some people believe this change was too quick but the monotonous flow of the Ant Arc begs to differ. The flow was slow for a reason, to build up a realistic development. Meruem actually begins to convince Netero so he says he has to end the fight quickly.

The only way Netero convinces Meruem to fight is through offering to tell him his name. Offering him his identity which he yerned for since he asked the Guards what his name was. There is a ironic juxtapostion here. Netero appeals to Meruem's humanity and yerning for an identity to fight him to not only fulfill his personal desires but to rid the inhumanity of Meruem.

Obviously the fight is stunning.

However there is one very significant moment.

Where Netero and Meruem switch roles. The collective humanity of Netero is what is actually inhumane whilst the humanity of the Ants expressed through Meruem is actually more human.

Trash dude. The last thread similar to this went down in flames. Calling suggested characters trash is not going to help anything.

The last thread went down in flames because of people wanting to have threads over controvertial topics that only get heated up discussions. I'd rather have this thread closed before it happens again.

i agree mr gamzee. speaking of which, does any of the MSPA characters fit into this tierlist?

I mean, you could literally just not follow the thread and skip the drama. Besides, this thread is pretty blatantly less controversial. There's no risk of insulting anyones favorite characters unless users actively go out of their way to do that.

This isn't a bad idea unlike "Worst written characters for every tier"...

Anyway it's better to quit the topic before flames appear

Flames won't appear if people don't insult each others characters but I guess to be well written is their service to the overall plot, personality, philosophy, psychology etc. Though a character must fit into their setting to be good imo before any of this stuff. Plus the plot tends to be good

This is very subjective thread tbh. One can think other character is better written et cetera et cetera, that's why I'm not a big fan of overall tops, but maybe it's going to be civilized thread with people politely arguing
