Today, Opportunity, affectionately named Oppy, was officially let go by NASA after eight weeks of attempts to bring it online. The Mars Rover is famous for two things- firstly, it was originally expected to function for only 90 days. That was fifteen years ago. Secondly, it was the Rover responsible for discovering water on Mars.
It has impacted a lot of people. It's last message back to Earth roughly equated to "My battery is low and it's getting dark".

Happy Valentine's Day all, I've had a good cry so here's some wholesome artwork of a robot that died millions upon millions of kilometers away in a desert the size of a planet.

For those interested, the last image refers to NASA's attempts to "wake up" the Rover- they sent her songs. In that case, Billie Holiday's "I'll Be Seeing You"- though this was not the only song, it was their farewell song. NASA has published a playlist on Spotify named "Opportunity, Wake Up!" if anyone wants to see it.
