Speed of Thought?

There are numerous fictional characters who can use their supernatural powers with only a thought, requiring no gestures, eye contact or other perceivable conduits for their abilities. This raises the question; just how fast is a human thought? If someone attacks with thought directly (and no indication of speed or distance is given), how fast can we assume that attack to be?

I am asking purely out of personal curiosity, and I do not expect this to give any character additional attack speed.
