Warning: Not trying to change anything. Just looking to clear things up for myself. I dunno shit about Marvel Comics.

Anyway, remember that time Punisher resisted the Penance Stare? I'm curious to see what the general opinion on that is here. Is having no regrets a canon weakness for Penance Stare, or is it more ComicBook bullcrap. If it is canon, let's have some fun and talk about characters that would laugh in Ghost Rider's face if he tried that on them.

The short answer is that the Penance Stare is sometimes rather inconsistent as different writers have different ideas about how it should or shouldn't function. However, the general idea is that the PS canonically works on people who don't give a shit, as confirmed by WoG, and that instances where it doesn't are inconsistencies.

It does have other canon weaknesses, though.

Would an extreme massochist resist it if they'd like the feeling of the pain they'd inflict on others? Thinking in particular of the hive from destiny, who's concept of love and concept of war are one and the same and the gods, who are siblings, consider being murdered by each other as acts of love.

@Apies

Yeah. Off the top of my head, there would be the fact that the Penance Stare requires a soul (or something equivalent) to work, and that it requires actual sight. It can't directly affect you if you can't see it.

@Wok

It varies, I think. I remember it being used on Madcap, who couldn't feel anything (physically or emotionally), and suddenly causing him extreme pain, but he then sort of craved it due to forgetting what pain felt like.

So if it was on say a slaneeshi cultist, they'd feel the pain, but not necessarily consider it bad?

Ok. Wonder who else it'd backfire like that on.
