River City Girls Discussion Thread

Just going there to say that I'm following this, besides acknowledging that it may also apply on older games developed by both Technos & Arc System Works themselves as a discussion thread (given how my old one with Double Dragon didn't have much traction, so ignore it; surprised that there's no Rival Schools profiles, given that it's canon to Street Fighter with Sakura's secret role and Akira showed up in SFV. Definitely would pit Kunio with Batsu not only thematically).

Also, you're welcome from a earlier mentioned thread and those original RCG calculations you did, @TacticalNuke002.

You and me both. Akira profile when?

But yeah, the original Kunio games have some crazy feats and we could potentially get some stuff out of Double Dragon seeing as how multiple characters from that series are in River City Girls now and Marian is mentioned to have beaten Skullmageddon on her own, who the girls fight to knock her out of brainwashing. But getting all of those calced due to the original calc page being overstuffed with more than 5 feats is gonna be difficult.

And what made it impressive was that she used to be fodder in the Double Dragon games. Now he knows how it felt to her.

Anyway, River City Ransom: Underground's pretty much non-canon, so separate profiles (Kunio under his original American name "Alex") shouldn't matter. And when thinking about it, the TV drama and mangas (unless there's connections in latter) are probably getting those, as well. Even a cartoon and 1994 movie (alongside it's Neo Geo tie-in) in Double Dragon's case (DarkDragonMedeus can perhaps help with that).

I'm also interested on Oleg's compilation blog, but problems are that some videos linking to feats were deleted and it's said his calculations are no longer usable for some reason last time I brought that up on a evaluation thread. The only thing may be that someone else would make their acceptable versions (though not all are required immediately).

Interesting how that connection is actually an explicit reference to Double Dragon Neon. Concrete evidence that the two games fall into the same continuity.

But yeah... I really hope to get more of the original Kunio-kun calcs done, some acceptable variants from his blog, and any others we can find. It would make the verse very much formidable. Some more Double Dragon feats would also be cool to calculate.

The game just released out according to a official Twitter account. Given that Kunio and Riki are also playable there like in a prequel, maybe new hax/equipment (on a tabber for latter akin to fellow heroes) would also apply on them.

What's exciting is that Guilty Gear characters are there as summonable assists, though I hardly doubt if they'll be approved canon to their own universe (which is unlikely to me; let's not make that a long subject here). As assists, crossover pages for them aren't really necessary.

Agreed. Although the best we could probably get is crossover-specific pages for the GG characters. It's pretty cool regardless.

Several accessories are listed to be able to increase the rate at which XP is earned. Something about Accelerated Development possibly being enhanced? I'm not sure if we can estimate by how much the characters would grow stronger after getting some hits in, but it would help the case for future fights.

I feel that we should start to determine the canonity of every work because River City is a long-running series.
River City Girls Zero is definitely canon, so we can determine that anything that falls within the same continuity as that is canon to RCG.

I'm talking about the whole River City series, meaning that River City Girls series is not the only series we are trying to determine the canonity.

I'm talking about the whole River City series, meaning that River City Girls series is not the only series we are trying to determine the canonity.
I know. In River City Girls Zero, Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka (the game it's remaking) is said by Misako and Kyoko at the beginning of the game to be a retelling of the very first adventure they went on with Kunio and Riki. That game has ties to the previous games Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun and Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun. It also features characters from Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu. So all three of those games are canonical to that timeline. Provie's inclusion in the story of 2 also connects River City Underground to the canon timeline.

As a side-project, the Double Dragon series is also a canon neighbor to River City Girls. Particularly Neon and III. Skullmageddon, a Neon-exclusive character makes an appearance as a shopkeeper in both 1 and 2. And Billy and Jimmy Lee's personalities and voice actors remain the same from Neon, WF making a point to make it a reference to Neon. As stated earlier in the thread, Skullmageddon still feels the lasting gut punch Marian gave her at the end of the game. As to why he doesn't remember brainwashing her as Evil Marian, we can account that to either PiS or him just not wanting to get on the girls' bad sides. Abobo also appears in River City Underground and RCG as a boss.

Sonny Lee, an exclusive character to III, makes an appearance in RCG2, to which Marian would confirm that she never met him. This would make sense as she doesn't really appear in III outside of the game manual confirming that she is okay. This also deconfirms the American release of III in which the story was changed so that Marian was possessed by an Egyptian goddess as the final boss. Obviously, Marian being alive confirms that the ending in which Marian was resurrected by the brothers in II is the canon ending. And from there we can determine that Double Dragon 1 is canon as well.

So the easy part is out of the way. Now into the can of worms that is the Kunio-kun canon.

We've already established that

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun
Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun
Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu
and Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka are all canon. Now let's explain why.

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun is where it all starts. Kunio fights to protect his friend Hiroshi, challenging the likes of Riki, Misuzu (a boss who appears in RCG as well), Shinji, and Sabu, a major crime boss, and the main antagonist of the series. The events of this will be brought up again as Sabu is a reoccurring enemy responsible for a lot of the conflict in the series. Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun is it's natural sequel. Characters from Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu show up both in Shodai and Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka. And Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka is specifically said to be a retelling of Kyoko and Misako's first adventure with Kunio and Riki in RCGZ in which Sabu gets his adoptive Ken whom he tricks into believing is Kunio's twin brother to frame him for a crime he didn't commit.

Downtown Nekketsu Story/River City Ransom is said to take place months after Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun and unlike the past games, he is now a 3rd year instead of a 2nd year. So everything from here on forth takes place after those first four games. From then on, things are a little more straightforward. Riki has his girlfriend Mami kidnapped so he and Kunio have to go and save her. Yamada is introduced here, who is a reoccurring villain in the series, and is revealed to be the one orchestrating the various misdeeds of the game and the takeover of Reihō Academy.

Nekketsu High School Soccer Dodgeball Club: Soccer Story reintroduces Misako as a character from Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi who will become a reoccurring character throughout the series.

Downtown Nekketsu March Super-Awesome Field Day has Reihō Academy apologize for the Yamada incident, but is actually just another brutal revenge plot by the new president of the school, Tōdō Mamoru, connecting it to River City Ransom.

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun: Bangai Rantō Hen introduces Yūji Munakata who shows up again in River City Melee: Battle Royale Special.

Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu: Subette Koronde Dairantō cites the events of Dodgeball Bu and Soccer Story as the reason why Nekketsu High School is so well known for their dodgeball and soccer teams.

Bikkuri Nekketsu Shin Kiroku! Harukanaru Kin Medal is a direct sequel to Super-Awesome Field Day with Tōdō Mamoru doing another athletic meet because his last plan to weaponize it failed.

Nekketsu! Street Basketball All-Out Dunk Heroes features Johnny, who first appeared in Bikkuri Nekketsu Shin Kiroku! Harukanaru Kin Medal, as a friend of Kunio's, and Godai from River City Ransom.

Super Dodge Ball features Shinji, a reoccurring antagonist from the series, and later on, Kenji, an exclusive character to this game, shows up in River City Girls.

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special starts a new continuity as a remake of the original game. River City: Tokyo Rumble is a sequel to this in the same continuity, as does Rival Showdown and All Stars Special.

However, Battle Royale Special returns to the same continuity of the original games despite saying that it takes place after All Stars Special. We can then consider that All Stars Special just took place in both timelines, but... uh... idk.

This is where the confusing part ends. River City Ransom: Underground features Abobo as an enemy character and introduces Provie, Chris, and Wes who all show up in River City Girls 2 mentioning events from this game.

WE ARE NOW FINALLY CAUGHT UP TO RIVER CITY GIRLS.

River City Girls has Kyoko and Misako travel around town beating everyone up trying to find Kunio and Riki and features multiple characters from throughout the series like Godai, Shinji, Abobo, makes references to Sabu and the events of the past games with him trying to kill Kunio and Riki, introducing his descendant Sabuko as a villain. Hasebe and Mami seem to have fourth wall knowledge and are aware of how batshit confusing this timeline can be. It also includes Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon as mainstay characters as well as Marian and Skullmageddon as vendors, and enemies like Linda as mobs, just as she does in DD.

River City Girls Zero begins with Misako and Kyoko finding the in-universe video game of Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka, which is a retelling of their first adventure with Kunio and Riki and playing it, suggesting that someone should remake it with anime cutscenes and music. Which-... Meta-joke.

River City Girls 2 obviously takes place after River City Girls 1 and makes the connection to Double Dragon more concrete with Marian as a full-on playable character, Skullmageddon establishing the events of Double Dragon Neon as canon by recollecting the gut punch she gave him at the end of the game, as well as introducing Sonny Lee from Double Dragon III as a one-off character. Sabu comes back as the main villain this time, as does Ken from Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka.

Okay that's it, I don't have to research this series anymore-

Also Guilty Gear, Mighty Switch Force, Cat Girl Without Salad, The Combatribes, and Shadow Force exist in River City Girls 2 idk.

The first three are probably just under cameo crossover logic but the last two could be argued for. But that’s — a whole other can of worms.

It is really complicated and it is definitely not new-fan-friendly.

Ok so it turns out there's more.

Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san!: A River City Ransom Story takes place sometime after River City Ransom, following one of the bosses from the game, Kobayashi Masao.

There's also River City Melee Mach which takes places after the events of All Stars, citing the sports completion as a prelude to the fighting tournament that takes place afterwards. It also seems to have the exact same story as Battle Royale so... maybe it's a remake or whatever, idk?

That should be all.

Now that we have a canon timeline to follow --

Would anyone be interested in redoing these calcs as some of them are outdated and in a blog post that's not likely to be accepted due to it's size?

1 and 3 are okay. 2 is from a remake, so I'm not sure. 4's link is broken. 5 and 6 are from the alternate continuity we talked about so, no. 7 is from Underground, so this should be fine and Provie should scale to it. 8 is fine as well. 9 is from a manga so we shouldn't scale it to any of the game characters. I should be able to submit 10 as a recalc as I don't see any problems with it. 11 should be fine, it's from Underground. 12 is from a live-action show, this cannot be used. 13/14 are from Underground and Misako and Kyoko fight Yamada/Slick in RCG so this should be fine. 15's link is broken. 16 should be fine. 17 is from a remake of Ransom so I'm not sure. 18 is from RCG, it's fine. 19 is from a live-action show, it cannot be used. 20 is from the alternate continuity.

Tl;dr

Feats 1,3,7,8,10,11,13,14,16, and 18 should be usable.
Feats 2 and 17 are maybes.
Feats 5,6 and 20 are from the Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special continuity.
9 is from a manga.
12 and 19 are from live-action shows.
And 4 and 15's links are broken.

I do know that Riki has his own prequel game (Riki Densetsu) based on his experience before meeting Kunio in Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special's continuity, which even expanded on why Hiroshi is targeted by Sabu (as explained here) and other gangs in the original game.
Interesting. So any feats from that game can be added to the Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special continuity characters, should we ever make profiles for them.

Something I noticed playing River City Girls 2 that I don't remember was in the original game, but the girls can learn new moves just by fighting in combat. If anyone can get that on record, that could be a neat thing to add for Accelerated Development.

Another thing to notice. The River City localizations and Kunio-Kun characters actually exist in the same universe. Roxy, the localization version of Hasebe, coexists alongside her as a shopkeeper in River City Girls 2. In this way, they are "canon" to the timeline as well. But this also means we cannot confirm any feats that happened specifically in the Western localizations unless a comparable version of them happened in the Japanese as well. For example, Provie wouldn't have had the same feat of taking down Slick just because he was comparable to Yamada, his Japanese counterpart. And likewise Yamada wouldn't have the same feats Slick demonstrated in that game. It's also noted that Crash from Crash n' The Boys (No relation to the band responsible for the world renowned classics "I'm So Sad, So Very Very Sad" and "We Hate You, Please Die") and Mr. K from Renegade also make appearances so... all of these localizations just take place in the same universe.

I also think Kunio's page needs to be revised as some of his abilities come from the Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special's continuity and not the original's. Right now, he is a composite page of the two and it would help to separate them into 2 for each respective continuity. One for the mainline Kunio-Kun timeline we've established and one for the Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special's timeline, which we will call the Reboot timeline, which would consist of Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special, Tokyo Rumble, Rival Showdown, All Star Special, and Battle Royale Special/Melee Mach.

Should we consider resistance to Fire, Poison, Electricity/Paralysis Inducement/Ice/Statistics Reduction for breaking free from their effects after a short amount of time?

Can someone do me a favor and attempt to use the block button on attacks that inflict a status effect? I'm trying to see something.

Same probably applies to Kunio and Riki, as they can survive those shots (where bullets only cause big health loss rather than instant death from the first game) in their final confrontation with Sabu inside that mansion. Without those pants from River City Ransom, too.

I think that would be a case of accelerated development. but I'm not sure. Like, they're stronger than before since the first game and now have the dura to take those shots.

Another bump, this time about Double Dragon Gaiden once again, besides a release date in eleven days (July 27th) and these two preview videos. Being rogue-like, the Lee Brothers, Marian (more on her side, especially a first tabber on P&A) and Matin are sure getting amounts of hax like the River City student quartet and Provie has.

Thank Technos on reminding about this thread (we should get into the main series at some point). It seems that even unlockable characters (even the final boss), besides the afore-mentioned quartet, can also have upgrades as well.

Funnily, I managed to get RCG2 from PlayStation Store's sale a few days or week ago.
