Pokemon Discussion Thread - Red & Blue arc

I'm given to understand Mega Evolutions are still the most popular new form/upgrade for old Pokémon mechanic even after all the attempts to replace them, so it's probably smart to bring them back and keep using them.

What about regional variants?

For me, I can see why they'd go with those boosts, namely to help old Pokémon get by with all the power creep. Adding a Mega form to an old Pokémon could help it return to use. I'm still hoping to see some overlooked old Pokémon receive a Mega form. Considering some of them held up nicely but are struggling with power creep, this could help them stay relevant.

I didn't like the regional variants because they ended up failing to be an upgrade to existing Pokémon since they were actually a whole new one, but also ironically failed to be a new Pokémon because they were just rehashes. In my view regional variants managed to be bad both as a new Pokémon and as an upgrade to existing Pokémon.

Moves and abilities can be done normally. Improving stats however is pretty much what Mega Evolutions are meant to achieve, and all while creating a new form to sell merchandise.
 
So that was just a nothingburger. The second season of Concierge which we knew was coming, a minigame slop app with below CoolMathGames levels of engagement (which they monetized the **** out of), literally nothing about Champions, and no new news for Z-A except an expressionless XY friend group clone, the main bad guy they didn't wanna admit is the bad guy, and a Dragonite Mega Evo that got leaked months ago anyway. I hate modern Pokemon so much.

I think the stat training seems interesting as it doesn't seem to be exactly equivalent to either EVs or IVs

Only Tierno seems to have an equivalent and pretty much every bad guy in the last 3 generations has been a subversion not directly connected to the evil team it could be a team skull, yell, or star situation.

And considering that the Kalos group is 2 empty characters and 2 almost empty characters... Probably Az's group is better (even with that, I think they will lead to us being able to see the previous Kalos group grown up) .

Strange wording. I wonder if this means there are no in-game sources of certain Mega Stones, making them, unfortunately, event-exclusive.
What if you just have the Mega Stone in your bag? Will the Ralts still arrive with its Mega Stone?

What Pokemon has pink in its colour scheme, a connection to crystals, & at least a connection to Mega Evolving?

Yeah the recent companion characters like Arven, Penny, Nemona, and Kieran have had a lot more character.

Yes. In the past your friends were just characters you met back up with once in a while, whom you actively choose to hang out with. Now your "friends" are either girls who are mentally sick in the head in different ways and refuse to leave when you tell them to **** off, or guys with no emotion who hate everyone.
 
Honestly, I do think it has to do how Pokemon have gotten more and more overdone with making the player feel special by shilling the player character. I mean, you being the most amazing trainer in the world was always a thing, but nowadays everyone just exists for you to solve their lives and them tell you how awesome you are at everything. If you think about it, despite Arven and Penny having proper arcs and development, a good chunk of their conversations was telling someone else how incredible you are, how much you impacted their lives for the better, and how much they wanted to be your best friend. Think about it, even Kieran's whole crisis is flat out in a big part because due to jealousy and insecurity regarding of how so much better and good at everything the player character is (granted being a screw up since before and having an abuser for a sister doesn't help).

I know it's too soon to judge the new cast, but I wouldn't be surprised that the game doesn't do much with them beyond being "your friends" and most of the interactions are telling you how cool you are and how much they like you.

Rants aside, I'm happy Emma is back (detective eh? I see what you did there). Was cool after her story was one of the more interesting parts in XY. I'm still on the fence regarding everything happening in Lumiose, but I'll wait and see. I do think that the approach is sounding interesting, by having your own team investigating the Mega Evolution incidents, having some weird criminal organizations activities around and the night tournament, it's not as straightforward but it could piece together interestingly.

Nemona has 1 (one) gag scene were gamefreak gives you the illusion of choice as they often do. Arven is a troubled orphan who didn't even realize he was an orphan with a dying dog and very quickly changed his tone with you, and Kierin is meant to be both a deconstruction of how everyone reacts to you always being the winner and a representation of toxic competition.
 
Rivals
1st gen: simple rival and that's it, although it changes and improves between the 2nd gen and the remakes of the 1st and 2nd gen.
2nd gen: the weakest rival of all (he will have pokemon at level 50 when you are going to face Red), and very simple in his original game, he needed the 3rd and 4th gen for his entire past of being Giovanni's son to appear/be revealed and for him to become someone interesting
3rd gen: good idea, terrible execution, they improved in the remake
4th gen: simple rival but not bad, however it is by far the one that leaves you the least alone
5th gen: 3rd gen idea but well done, N is no rival and the one in the sequel is a good rival
6th gen: nothinburgers
7th gen: apparently the final of their development is hidden in the ultra versions
8th gen: Your main rival, it will not leave you alone and has the lilie effect (Gamefreak wants to sell he to you very hard, so they make it appear at times when it would have been better for another character to appear), apart from that, excellent character and rival, the other 2 were somewhat wasted but they are not bad characters
8th dlc: meh, they are neither good nor bad
9thg gen: all 3 are good characters and all 3 have clear reasons to love you so much
9th dlc: the best rival of all, a complete deconstruction of the friendly rival philosophy

I completely forgot about Lyra. .. Does the unchosen genre of the 2nd gen remakes count as a rival? What do we think of the 4th gen one? Even so, both are nothinburguers before the French nothinburgers (Kalos) appeared.
 
They are good characters, why would I need to downplay others?, I just gave my opinion
(I could be remembering wrong, but isn't the 2nd gen basically a walking tutorial and that's it, and isn't the 4th gen just the professor's companion with no personality other than needing help from time to time?)

What I like about a rival is that they are a fun character to deal with or a well-written character
If your character barely does anything in general, to the point that they seem like an NPC ... well there is the problem (that would fall under the Unchosen Gender of 4th gen and 2nd remake),
If your character is based on literally one thing and never changes or does so literally in the last relevant dialogues they will have ... well there is another problem (The dancer only talks about dancing and the researcher only talks about the pokedex, the only time they don't do it is on the bridge / their last important scene) for the same reason Xana is saved, because at least she talks about more than one thing, (although only thanks to the fact that she appears more), she serves as a character although at the end of the day she is very forgettable, and that is why the unused gender of Kalos is such a bad rival (her Her defining characteristic is that she's good at Pokémon battles, and that's all you'll ever know about her. Apparently, she's frustrated with losing, but you find that out in one dialogue (postgame), and immediately afterward, she acts like it doesn't matter.

The 3rd gen ones are just poorly executed. The idea that your opponent slowly discovers they're more interested in something other than Pokémon battles and then gives up halfway through is an interesting idea. But that's why you don't have an opponent for half the game. And since Wally is missing the entire game, he barely does anything. (The remake improved them by letting your first opponent appear a bit more, even if it's not as an opponent, at least you don't end up without a character for half the game.) Even when Wally does basically the same thing, the fact that you weren't left without a character for too long allows it to feel more natural in the game's progression.

Barry is fine
The Unova ones are fine (the idea of the 3rd generation executed perfectly + N + rival directly linked to the game's plot from before with good development and resolution in Hugh)
The Alolan ones are fine (although their development is much simpler, at least there are repercussions in their lives for their change of attitude or they are directly linked to the plot)
The Galarian ones are fine, (the only problem with this gen in Rivals is that half of the things about Marnie are optional so you can miss her information and Bede should have been present at the end of the game)
The 9th ones are directly catalysts of the plot, what did you expect? If you start and follow the 3 main plots of the game it's because of them, and the ending is completely tied to one of the characters while the DLC is purely to build Kieran (Carmine is fun to deal with, but she serves mostly to affect Kiera's plot, and she should get a psychologist)

Why can’t we just talk normally and bond over our profiles and CRTs?

Have you ever reflected on the idea that maybe it’s not about you? It seems like you might have too much personal stake in this for it to really be “just talking normally.”

Maybe it’s not that people are trying to upstage you. Maybe it’s that you’re too invested in being seen as the top voice here.

I’ve seen you act this way in the Zelda thread too man. Why you gotta be like this?

It's all because of Digimon and Death Battle. Sean also caused a lot of trouble in the Death Battle discussion thread by being condescending to others.
 
Holy shit, not everything is about Death Battle or Digimon. Literally the closest thing to Death Battle we’re even talking about is the fact that I don’t want another Pokemon VS Digimon to ever happen again, but that’s just one of the reasons why I post profiles and stuff.
