My Hero Academia General Discussion Thread #18

Alright, what other abilities do we think Gear Shift will give Deku? Cause me personally, I think he’s got more tricks to do with that Quirk than just the Quintuple Smash. Maybe some weird reality bending punch?

Idk how MHA would be sexist considering how many strong female characters the manga has but oh well 🤷‍♂️
MHA isn't sexist, but having some strong female characters isn't really a complete counter-argument. nor does it mean that female characters are as relevant or given the same amount of care and importance in the story.

The strongest female character in the series appeared and died in a single arc; her relevance and importance to the plot was as questionable as the arc itself. I say that even though I love Star and Stripe and defend the writing of her character itself whenever I get the chance.

MHA definitely isn’t particularly great with its female cast.

While it’s certainly not as bad as other series it can be pretty noticeable especially compared to how many male characters are fully developed or given much more attention to.

There’s like other examples but eh. It’s honestly not the worse thing about MHA and it’s most definitely not the worst offender out of shounen series that’s for sure.

Honestly, having a strong female cast, or at least a cast of female characters that get the spotlight, hold their own in engagements or simply do what men can do without being treated as helpless or a burden is a good indication that the series isn't sexist. It might not be treating female characters as well as male characters but i can't really fault Horikoshi for that. He's a male, and writing for the opposite sex can be fairly difficult at times. At least, when you're trying to make them very complex characters.

I enjoy most of the female cast in MHA more than most other shonen, even if they're not as deep as the men for the simple fact that have some great moments, character or otherwise. One of my favorites has gotta be Mt. Lady. Seeing her live up to the hero title was a joy to watch and read. She kept getting thrown off and she kept getting back up. Cant get anymore respectful to a female character than that, honestly.

Also, when I said strong, i didn't mean it in the sense of like, physical strength or ability. Just that these female characters are solidly written and treated with respect. They're given their moments to shine throughout the series. MHA just has a really fun and enjoyable female cast. Unlike Naruto, for example 🗿

Naruto treats its females terribly. Kishimoto has even gone on record saying he doesn’t write female characters that well (or something to that affect)

Bleach has generally a pretty strong, diverse and female cast tbh. Kubo did aight on that for the most part.

MHA in the part of having an aight female cast. It’s not great and could certainly use more development and have more moments of spotlight being on the female characters rather than away from them (Mina) but it’s fine for what it is and for the female characters focused on.

People are probably just more so comparing it to how say Jujutsu Kaisen treats its female characters. Which is fantastic by the way. Gege’s no slouch there.
