Actually, now that I think about it, didn't the Millenium Star just "fall" from the center of the universe because it was too young/weak?

Something like that. It was a newborn. That doesn't really change it's speed, however, and that it had to be actual movement, unless the gravity of the Mushroom Kingdom is just that unfathomably powerful.
