Considering the way in which John skillfully deals with whole teams of specially armed soldiers from the High Seat armored heat to toe in gear that had a few of them literally ignore being shot at in the back and the head by other members of the Continental and another group just advancing and firing back as they were being fired upon, not to mention the fact John had no clue about this new gear as we could tell from the way Charon told him of how things had changed in the time he had been out, I'd say he's faced way worse odds in a much more successful way.

This is before he's given the shotgun with special armor piercing ammunition, and despite fighting hordes of these dudes with the disadvanteges of numbers and equipment, he still goes off to fight the Zero's people and then Zeno himself and succeds. It is fair to say he's the more skilled one.
