It's basicaly who strike first. RE Hunter has it's Headhunter attack that can counter L4D leap (plus, unlike normal human, RE Hunter can free itself since its stronger compared to human). Add here that even though RE Hunters are kind of slow, they can still aim dodge incoming fire.

I don't think L4D has the higher durability here. A single shotgun blast can take him down rather easily. RE Hunter on the other hund is bulkier and more massively built and can take on numerous gunshot wounds. It's got that tough skin which L4D hunter will have problems penetrating, but RE Hunter can pick him up and rip him apart due to his fraility. L4D can keep his distance from RE Hunter, but in the end, he still needs to get up close, and if he gets hit, he's toast.
