Didn't 17 said Gero returned to use the energy absorption model after he failed controlling him and 18? I'm pretty sure that means the rest aside from 16 didn't have the infinite engine

And, as already explained before, the Big Gete Star only absorbs energy to grow in size. Daizenshuu 6 states something similar as well.
