While we don't know the exact size of DBZ Moon, we know it has similar effects to our real life one via Day / Night cycle, and moonlight.
There are 3 seperate times the moon is destroyed
1- Master Roshi (disguised as Jackie Chun) destroys the moon at the end of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament using the MAX Power Kamehameha, which takes considerably more effort than for Piccolo. But this is considered an outlier since Roshi was afraid of Old King Piccolo, who could only destroy cities at the time.
2- Next is piccolo feat of destroying the moon. Just 5 years earlier his max power attack was only small country level. But he is upgraded to Moon+ for destroying the Moon since Gohan turned into a Great Ape. The producers weren't really thinking about it when they did this, and were more concerned with making things dramatic than making them consistent. As such, I'd call this a plot hole, but it's a pretty minor one in the grand scheme of things.
3- Third and final is Arale for destroying the Moon by throwing a Rock at it. And we know that Arale is in the same universe / planet as DBZ.
