Characters who were different than you expected

If there's a character from a franchise you haven't yet delved into, but whom you keep hearing about in some form of another, there's a chance you will have your own impression of him that may or may not be accurate to how he actually is in the story

Intricate details about his backstory, specifics of what he does in the plot , trivia regarding him, they are all natural to not guess with 100% accuracy. I'm more talking about when a general idea you have about a character you don't know, is completely different from what you think after actually going through the source material.

For instance, I used to think Asgore Dreemurr would be intimidating , barbaric and filled with hatred for humanity, which is obviously far off from his actual portrayal in UT. What example of such characters are there for you?
