so, the mafia goon in the beginning can fly up to space, and start knocking on the ships door, while the ship moves. the journey is at least 5 LY, and the ship seems to be moving pretty fast relative to that on the screen where it shows the distance from home. this probably means that the ship is MFTL, which would make the mafia goons MFTL, and anyone who has fought them.
also, although the planet is visible while the ship is "moving" it kinda seems like the game tries to gloss over that, as it very quickly glances over it, and draws your attention away from it. i think this is because it would be laggy to spawn in the planet when the cutscene ends. this probably means that that's just a technical limitation, and should be disregarded. the robot voice at the start also says that the ship is flying at full speed , which further supports this.
if scaling to the mafia goon doesn't work, the ship also stops very quickly (from MFTL to 0 in at most 6 or 7s), and hat kid doesn't go flying into a nearby wall, which would make her and anyone who's fought her MFTL.
