When I decided to get into Umineko, I started with the anime, and then continued with the manga from around Volume 4, if I remember correctly, where the anime had ended.
The problem was that I didn't understand anything when I watched the anime. One moment someone would die, then they'd be alive again. I had no idea what was going on. A character would die, and then everything would suddenly go back to the way it was.
I only understood what was actually happening after I started reading the manga from the beginning.
