UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE [shiny new] DISCUSSION THEAD

Wasn't there something about Undyne making a heart-shaped hole in a boulder in the Valentines Newsletter card? I don't recall if there's anything decanonizing that regarding UT, but it might be a bit dubious.

Why are you so obsessed with that
Uncanon (or not canon) stuff are events that normaly dont make sense inside the story due lack of continuity.

The joke kinda comfirm those events happened outside canon like susie unused joke, the voice in the code, echidna, the npc from undertale that want go to the other room, redacted, the egg man and etc.

Time travel has strict rules, there is an alpha timeline and there are doomed timelines. Doomed timelines exist by and large so they won’t. It runs off the idea that by and large changes won’t happen without a prompting. I.E. Dave is always going to throw Cal into his sprite unless someone stops him, so one Dave has to make the mistake so they know to go back in time and stop the other Dave from doing so. Then in doing this the doomed timeline is erased from existence and the alpha timeline continues.

There are 3 pillars of canon; truth, relevance, and essentiality. Looking at the above the doomed timeline in question fulfills all of these things. It’s a true event that did absolutely happen and was true to the characters, it’s relevant to the overall story being told because without it Cal isn’t able to become the many things it needs to be stuck as a sprite, and it was essential to show this to us because if we didn’t see it a whole bunch of stuff in the story wouldn’t make any sense to the reader.

Where retcon travel comes in is that it’s much looser, much less clean. When John comes to a case of two equally probable outcomes, like choosing to eat meat or candy, they both happen. So at this moment the narrative was split into two realities rather than two timelines. One where John ate meat and felt the desire to propagate the alpha timeline, and another where he ate candy and felt like just not doing it afterwards.

So yes there are two entirely separate realties one which has all the pillars canonicity (meat) and one that has none of them (Candy). The one that lacks them all is unstable, in-universe it’s doomed to conceptually unravel and collapse which Alt Calliope works on delaying through stabilization by bringing in certain elements from the canon story into her fanfic universe. Ultimately if it had been left to its own devices it would have been a forgotten fanfic where nothing in it matters to the reader.

The Candy reality lacks truth not only because Caliborn’s masterpiece/lord English’s birth never happens thus nothing about it can have happened , but also because it’s not beholden to how the characters would necessarily act. Instead rather their actions and personalities malleable based on the interpretations and biases of whatever author seizes control aka fan fiction, in this case they are at the mercy of Alt Calliope’s influences.

It lacks relevance because nothing that happens here is needed to understand the story of meat, rather Candy becomes a vestigial dumping ground for plot points that could have been but never were. Like Karkat x Dave was the canon end game but there were also teases of Karkat x Meenah that never went anywhere meaningful in the grand scheme. Meat continues Davekat and Candy gives a chance for Katfish to shine, but you didn’t need katfish for the story to feel complete. You needed Davekat (even if you dislike it) for the story Hussie had specifically chosen to tell.

It lacks essentially because on the surface nothing here matters to homestuck in the grand scheme of stuff, or even to meat, because almost nothing in candy is able to get to meat. Now there is an importance aspect here in that similar to the act vs intermission structure playing, Candy and Meat are doing the same. The state of what is essential is in flux, and if something becomes essential suddenly the stuff leading to it becomes relevant and that then means it has to be true.

Meat and Candy are written to be a canon continuation vs a fanfic continuation and asks the question which is more valid, can they be equally valid, can fanfiction overtake the canon ending?

Over the course of the narrative Candy and Meat slowly start to swap. First it’s Vriska the relevance stealing super important spotlight hog being sent to Candy, any place with her is destined to become important she’ll make sure of it. Second was the death of John, John is the main character of homestuck for meat to lose its John it means the only remaining version of the main character is now in Candy, lastly it was Lord English his defeat happens not in meat but in Candy where Alt Calliope consumes him. There are other small bits to like how only one reality, Candy, has propagated a new generation to continue from while Meat hasn’t yet.

Gradually meat had been becoming less relevant and thus ties to the Ult Dirk vs Alt Callie thing. There is a reason they parallel Dirk with Caliborn and not just because Caliborn is in a way one of his splinters. One of the things Caliborn did was gradually hijack the narrative until the important plot was shoved and forced to continue in the intermissions while the Acts just became watching Caliborn sit in a room and draw art, and Hussie even in-universe mocks Caliborn for how irrelevant his story is going to largely be for us readers. (Leading him to corrupt the story cartridge in spite). Ult Dirk is trying to create a canon continuation of the story but without him seemingly even really aware that by the end of epilogue Candy is the final chapter of meat and meat is the final chapter of Candy. It’s as the story itself not so subtly saying the ending of Candy actually matters while the ending of Meat doesn’t.

This continues into Homestuck: Beyond Canon where the main acts and bulk of the narrative of Act 1 is focused on Candy, and Meat meanwhile is basically the equivalent of the intermission WV fussing around with creating can town. Candy is home to the new main characters as well as certain important character arcs for existing characters, and thus by extension everything up to their point of finding away to emerge is relevant, true, and essential. Or at least by escaping from Candy into meat they make it so. While Meat is setup for the secondary main cast and it’s not clear yet where this is all going but basically Candy gained increasing importance up to getting everyone who mattered setup and sent to where they need to be which leaves Candy’s fate from that point up in the air.

But positions the story of essentially what happens if an author integrates fan fiction created elements into their canon story, not just inspiration but whole sale planting.

Anyway in the epilogue meat is only effected by Candy in that Terezi was surprised John wasn’t as old as she expected and Alt Calliope emerged from it with a robotic ult Dave and Aradia. In candy meat effected it heavily like providing karkat Meenah and a ghost army letting him kickstart a proper rebellion, let lord English drop in and be devourered allowing Alt Calliope gain the power to leave, provided a bunch of Terezi conversations that steered John through life, and so on. BUT there is another level to this in that they effect the READER by working together. They both explore facets of the characters that existed allowing you a fuller picture/understanding them. Like seeing the way Karkat would be with and without Dave much in the way we explored who Rose would be (through Jasperose and Rose) without Kanaya.

Ultimately though both realties are dubious in nature. While one is more canon than the other the fact is both are being manipulated by author-tier characters, Ult Dirk and Alt Callie. When you get down to it Meat is just Ult Dirk’s fanfiction like Candy is Alt Callie’s, but because an arbitrary things like canon/word of god Dirk’s fanfiction gets inherently treated with more weight even as it seems to gradually lessen. It’s done this way so if you like how Homestuck ended then you can ignore the epilogues, if you don’t like how it ended you can still ignore the epilogue and create your own ending with a message that it’s real and valid to you and ultimately that’s all that really matters. But for beyond canon it continues off the assumption of Meat as the canon ending as Dirk wants it to be.

This was a comment about homestuck

will someone read this ? Because i wanna argue something similar about this due kris having memories like susie voice in the beginning of ch 1 in unused code or even ch 4 whem you interact with the book inside the fountain

"Wood can be used to stoke the fire which melts the girl's icy heart."
"The stronger you get, the more you can CUT, but you can't do it alone."
"Will do anything to protect HERO_SWORD."
Interesting...

"Revealing the succulent candies and meats hidden inside of the characters from the classic game series you know and love."
???

"The hero that can wield an axe. Previously an antagonist, but in an emotionally moving event, she joined the side of light. A stunning replica of your favorite character from the classic game series you know and love. Using the axe, this hero can chop down the trees at a lower level than the other controllable characters. Wood can be used to stoke the fire which melts the girl's icy heart. But, it's said that the greatest fuel of all is friendship. Axe not included."

"The hero wields a sword. How you use the sword determines the story! A stunning replica of your favorite character from the classic game series you know and love. Using the sword, this hero can chop down hedges and baddies alike, revealing the succulent candies and meats hidden inside of the characters from the classic game series you know and love. The stronger you get, the more you can CUT, but you can't do it alone. True strength lies hidden within your friends! Sword not included."

"The hero that can wield an axe. Uses powerful healing magic. Will do anything to protect HERO_SWORD. A stunning replica of your favorite fluffy character from the classic game series you know and love. His long scarf can be used to hang onto hooked objects, which will allow you to cross gaps and scale tall tall heights. Some say it looks like lips or the tongues of a long lizard, which is another charming point in favor of this velveteen masterpiece. Fluffiness not included."
Based on what Echidnacodefan 2512 said, "revealing the succulent candies & meats hidden inside of the characters from the classic game series you know and love." may refer to revealing the hidden truths/canons & falsehoods/noncanons within those characters?
Which is strange to be revealed in the context of "chopping down hedges & baddies". Why would chopping them down reveal what's canon & not? The meat of the story & the sweet little lies that mislead us? (Or falsehoods, whether born of audiences' presumption or otherwise.)

Still, that phrasing, introducing "baddies" & then implying they're the "characters from the classic game series you know and love." implies that Mantle's enemies are indeed UT/DR characters.

Curious that she's said to have joined the side of Light. I guess the Delta Warriors are such a side.
Why could wood stoke the fire that melts the girl's icy heart? A wooden stake? The trees of the forest? A pencil like what Kris may wield?

It's curious she's noted as being able to cut down trees at a lower level than the other playable characters. Besides suggesting physical superiority, &/or better stat growth, it also suggests HERO_SCARF can cut trees.... As well as being just curious, since cutting trees is an obstacle in the narrative of "Mantle". HERO_AXE being able to do it sooner/more easily.... I mean, maybe it's just Axes being better for chopping trees than swords & scarves, but.... Once again, Susie having more freedom/control/power than the Player implication?

The fact that HERO_AXE joined after an emotionally moving event suggests Mantle/TV Time! has a history that parallels Deltarune. We don't see how nor why HERO_AXE joins in either game. In one, she's there when the right controller is plugged in, in the other she's there when a certain level is begun.
The fact we don't see this means either it's meant to be a mystery -Which would be strange. I'd be surprised if we revisited this game format.- or we don't need to see it, which, in fiction is often because it was something we saw already. (Or very close to it.)
Perhaps that's a bit speculative, but that would suggest their stories are similar, meaning whatever is told about the heroes of Mantle/TV Time! likely holds truth about their out-of-game counterparts.

Mysteriously, CUT is in all-caps, as though it's a special action or an anagram? Surely it's not important enough for that like LOVE was in Undertale? Cutting is special in Mantle, as its needed to progress, but what.... CUT away bonds or something?

Yes
  • Oh, Kris! It's a free editable CYBERPEDIA! I'll add an entry...!
  • (Ralsei wrote an article about LOSING RECRUITS. Read it?)
  • From now on, defeating enemies with violence will make them LOST.
  • LOST enemies cannot become RECRUITs ever again.
  • But, the bonds you break may make you stronger...
No
* (Who has time to read a book in the Cyber World?)

Probably unrelated.

Perhaps most intriguing is "How you use the sword determines the story!". Kris's sword can turn into a shield, in a very literal sense, in the Dark World. Is it as simple as that?
Is it because the White Pen of Hope might be a sword, given pens might be Kris's weapon? But it's called a pen, not a sword by someone already in the Dark World, & it's entering the Dark World that makes pens swords, & the quote is from a writer.
.....The Twisted Sword, maybe? But if it can be used to determine the story in more than 1 way, that feels like a question that leaves more questions than answers.
...."Determines the story".... Determination...? Didn't Toby Fox recently preview Chapter 5 dialogue suggesting Shadow Crystals are tied to Determination? (Though I've seen an intriguing theory that they may also just be despair.)
If the Twisted Sword were made of Determination, its Trance Down effect.... If it's meant to be opposite to the ThornRing's Trance effect.... Determination forms the Dark World, & with it, you can defy a Trance? Defy what the Dark Worlds make you perceive, maybe? Is it to do with Dark Worlds being illusory, or because the Thorn Ring puts the wearer into a trance? Mind Manipulation? Lots of speculation.

HERO_SCARF's healing magic being called "powerful" is interesting.
I saw a comment noting that his description focuses mostly on how he's cute, how he looks & his use as a tool for the player. "His long scarf can be used to hang onto hooked objects, which will allow you to cross gaps and scale tall tall heights." (Also, that's a Zelda location name reference, pretty sure.)

"Some say it looks like lips or the tongues of a long lizard, which is another charming point in favor of this velveteen masterpiece."

A long lizard? I saw comments noting that this suggests a snake, which are associated with betrayal.
Besides that.... Jockington significance? I don't know of any other "long lizards" significant in this series.
But then again, what would saying it looks like lips mean? Just a joke about looks?

Also, it's weird that it says "velveteen". The replica says "fluffiness not included". Is the IRL merch even plushies or fabric or whatnot? If not, strange to call a replica of pixels "velveteen". I remember Ralsei's dialogue for being DOWNed/SWOONed against The Roaring Knight saying Ralsei became a pile of fluff.... But I'm pretty sure that's meant to reference Earthbound's teddy bear text, meant to pair with the party member KO text of Mother (1)/Earthbound Beginnings saying a party member was "hurt & beaten", which is echoed by Susie.

The word brings to mind the Velveteen Rabbit, though. It's an old story about how toys can become real through the love of their owners & how a velveteen rabbit ultimately becomes a real rabbit.
But while there might be some loose parallels (Like the classic fantasy of objects being given life.), I'd be surprised if there's a connection. & I certainly don't see how it could apply to Ralsei. Ralsei becoming a real Lightner? For what purpose, narratively speaking?

Oh & of course, "Will do anything to protect HERO_SWORD.". AKA, the one that represents the player in Mantle. Though I'm not sure it's overlaid over the SOUL in TV Time!
Still, that suggests, especially with the snake stuff the worrying notion that Ralsei's loyalties may not wholey lie with the Delta Warriors....

Quite intriguing stuff.
Hopefully no one minds my rambling about this.

alr thanks, mainly did the 60fps thingy because that's what the video where the feat comes from plays at.
You should update the calc, but my math says this tanks the feat to 0.2990 Megajoules

Still a great support feat, just not as high as it once was

I heard you finally can see kris is able to retcon events and lived events before.

I heard you finally can see kris is able to retcon events and lived events before.
Basis?
will someone read this ? Because i wanna argue something similar about this due kris having memories like susie voice in the beginning of ch 1 in unused code or even ch 4 whem you interact with the book inside the fountain
Likewise, what's the basis for Kris "having memories like Susie voice"?
I assume by "even ch 4 whem you interact with the book inside the fountain", you're referring to the "peculiar book" in the library?

Watch this (echidna posted it earlier).
In short: if you have beaten Jevil any time before but not in current save file, you can go west of castle town, and get there shadow crystal and Jevilknife/Devilstail. So we basically retcon us not beating Jevil.

This concept actually sounds dope, so I will try to check something

The hole in playertown

If you mean the dialogue at the end:

Kris: "(There's a book here!!!)"
Ralsei: "Yes, Kris! It's a book!"
Susie: "The hell are you so excited about?"

It is curious, since brackets often seem to suggest unspoken thoughts.
My guesses are:
A. Kris spoke/whispered it out loud. (I'm not sure there's ever been a case where bracketed dialogue is audible.)
B. Ralsei, similar to pointing out the TP bar, is aware of that dialogue of Kris's & showing it here. (Though, usually, he behaves as if only hearing what Kris saying. However, in most of those cases, what Kris says isn't visible nor audible to the audience.)
C. It's an oversight; As said, normally, Kris's dialogue isn't visible nor audible to the audience, with bracketed dialogue others are aware of.
D. Susie might not be aware of any dialogue, & just be seeing an expression on Kris's face. Kris could be staring intently or pointing. Wouldn't be the first time DR didn't have sprites/animation for something, especially as small & missable a moment as this.
E. It was done just for the funny; It's meant to entertain the audience, so the dialogue is visible, both so they can appreciate it, & it can be further enhanced by the characters reacting to it & it being clear what they're reacting to.

It's strange. Maybe Susie was just used as a placeholder in that early version of that cutscene? It being experimental could also be supported by the other fancy text effects present.

It's also possible in previous versions of the story, Susie did wake up Kris. They knew each other before Chapter 1's events if a story in the Spamton Sweepstakes is to be believed. So maybe Toby just had them be friends earlier than that. Though, that might go against the character arc being developed, hence it being undone.

Watch this (echidna posted it earlier).

Ah.

This dialogue of Seam's may be relevant:

  • [With Spamton NEO's Shadow Crystal, but without Jevil's]
    • ... What is that? It appears you have a Shadow Crystal.
    • ...
    • Unfortunately, I believe that you are missing one from your previous adventures.
    • ...
    • But, are you sure? Are you sure you didn't defeat that clown...?
    • Perhaps... You just haven't remembered that you had yet.
    • That's right, as long as you ever defeated that enemy in the past...
    • Then perhaps, even now, that Crystal might turn up somewhere close... Perhaps!
  • [After collecting Jevil's Shadow Crystal from the west of the Castle Town]
    • Aha! Another Shadow Crystal! You found it...
    • You can't see it, so perhaps you didn't notice...
    • Didn't you defeat him? Didn't you defeat Jevil?
    • Here, I'll take that Crystal. Now, you have collected 2 of them! Huzzah!
  • [With Spamton NEO's Shadow Crystal, after already giving them Jevil's]
    • Well, what have we here! You managed to find another Shadow Crystal...
    • Oh, is that so? That salesman had found the crystal in the old machine...?
    • I wonder... if perhaps, long ago, that old machine was very important to someone.
    • A certain Lightner, perhaps... or maybe it's just a hunch. Haha!
    • At any rate, it's truly unfortunate a Darkner decided to steal that power...
    • Or, is it fortunate? Because of that, you found a new Crystal.
    • Here, let me hold onto that for you. Ha ha ha!

Strangely, it's framed as not noticing/remembering that they were defeated.

Also, this:

  • [Beginning of Chapter 2, after defeating Jevil in Chapter 1 or collecting one of his items from the west of the Castle Town if available]
    • So we are here now, in a new world.
    • And right off the heels of defeating that clown... Incredible.
    • ... Oh? What's that? It seems like he gave something to you.
    • That's right... You must not have noticed it.
    • That Crystal... It's nearly invisible, but you've been holding it this entire time.
    • Here, I'll take it off your hands and appraise it.
    • ...
    • Incredible! To think he had a Shadow Crystal...
    • Shadow Crystals, so called because you can only see their shadow.
    • ...
    • Call it a premonition, but I get the feeling you may find more of these...
    • ... If you continue to defeat stronger adversaries like him, that is.
    • If you can gather more Shadow Crystals, bring them here!
    • I'm sure I can stitch together something incredible for you...
  • [After starting Chapter 2 from a fresh SAVE file and having defeated Jevil on a previous Chapter 1 SAVE file, then collecting one of his items from the west of the Castle Town, after already talking to Seam in Chapter 2]
    • Ah, yes, that's right. It didn't occur to me until just now, but...
    • You three defeated that clown last time, didn't you?
    • ... Oh? What's that? It seems like he gave something to you.
(From there, the dialogue is the same as above.)

It's strange that he calls victories on previous Chapter 1 SAVE files "last time". Is it specifically for those continued into Chapter 2? Does his wording differ for files continued into Chapter 2, those that were deleted, or those in different slots?

Even now, the nature of the SAVE files seems so mysterious. (I know it5's something Gaster-related, & that Kris has one, but that doesn't explain much of how they function diegetically/in-universe.)

As a Brazilian, this is very likely.
Oh man, let's kill that dog.

I was more talking about

"Usually, you dont pay attention to them"

The books

"This time, you did. That's all"

Why "this time" ?
Kris does often show a disregard for books, or just reading in general.
But Chapter 4's world is full of them, & it's somewhat music-themed, plus, it's a book at the back side of a bookcase, which is kind of an unusual place.
So they might've just buckled from seeing all the books & decided now was a good time to show interest in one.
Albeit, for comedic reasons like acknowledging the book's presence rather than actually reading it.

If "No" is chosen about reading Ralsei's Cyberpedia, the result is:
"(Who has time to read a book in the Cyber World?)"

In their home, Kris says there's no time to read the books in the book shelf.
I don't remember if they say something similar for Librarby books.

But they often seem to say there's no time to read books.

There is no neuter pronoun in Portuguese. I mean, it exists, it's the same as the masculine pronoun but sometimes it can also be feminine, it's kind of hard to explain.
Every time the masc/neuter pronoun is used, a citation/asterisk appears. Once the credits roll, you will be forced to sift through the piles of citations explaining how it’s being used.

It means that Susie apparently knows the definition of Apatheia. Wasn't aware she was into stoic philosophy. Also more proof that her biggest issue with reading and writing is a desperate need for glasses.

Soo darkners can be affected by someone philosophy whem opening a dark fountain.

And glasses is something susie is connected somehow (due the purple soul).

There are also the pronouns that LGBT people use. They invented their own neutral pronoun, but it's not official in our language, it's not in the dictionary, and if you write those pronouns in an essay it will be considered a grammatical error.

This is probably what Toby Fox would use to refer to Frisk, Chara, and Kris, because considering the size of the LGBT community in the game, if he decides to use the grammatically correct pronouns (the masculine for neutral), they'll probably want to kill him.

Also the same in Spanish (I think)
