Metroid V: To Infinity and Beyond

Uuuuh... can't say I am a fan of that decision. It seems that everything nowadays needs to have a multiverse slapped on it.

The article is roughly translated via DeepL via OP's words, and those who can read Japanese could perhaps provide better translations looking at the Raws, but it is chronologically after Super but before Fusion. My rough guess is between Other M and Samus & Joey, but the existence of a multiverse will open a lot of doors. As in, it may be linear from Samus Aran's perspective, but they can just keep making more games down the line. And there could be cases of where she travels to distant past or futures.
On one hand, I like that it doesn't take place in the usual Prime series' placement between Metroid 1 and 2. On the other, it doesn't really make sense that the game opens with a massive space pirate attack, as the destruction of Zebes in Super was supposed to be the end of the space pirates (until the federation cloned them).

Now that some time has passed what's everyone's consensus on Sylux's Mini Black Hole attack? At the very least Samus' will being able to resist a Black Hole's pull is quite the willpower feat although I'm not sure how to quantify that.

I genuinely just haven't looked into Beyond at all. The hype was killed pretty hard by... you know... for me and I haven't had the interest to sift through it since I'm probably not gonna play it.

Does have an FTL feat early on in Samus dodging Sylux' beam which is... theoretically SoL if you treat the Hunters description as reliable. Don't know anything more than that but black holes are something with fairly strict standards so unless it's shown pretty realistically it's not likely to be rated.

The lasers fired by Psi Bots indicate likely connections to real lasers. It's usually easier to just aim dodge them, but they aren't like instant frames iirc, meaning it's possible to move in relation to them. And yeah, Psychic Beam is a notable attack speed upgrade. As for the Black Hole thing, we might need more input from Calc Group experts there. But the black hole doesn't move unlike Raven Beak's is a start, but probably still not enough.

Prime 4 definitely wasn't the best Prime series game, but it's definitely being far too overhated on the internet and still an overall really good game. Sol Valley did have its share of emptiness, but the Galactic Federation troopers were actually pretty cool. And while it wasn't as exploration heavy, nor as much enemy variety (I was expecting a lot more Sylux forces/Space Pirates and not just so many Grievers). But on hard mode, the combat was actually quite brutal. Though Sylux's backstory was cringe; it was him being a sore loser than he failed to retrieve this dangerous weapon he wanted and disobeyed order to get. Which literally incinerated a whole bunch of GF troopers and mechs but did no damage to him or Samus. Then Samus humiliated him when she rescued him. But he's basically what Sephiroth in FF7 Remake trilogy is now. Worst part was the ending, felt far too out of character for Samus to just abandon her comrades orders or not. Though she did travel to an ancient past, and that's supposed to set up for what comes next. She probably still plans to save them via Time Travel which Prime 5 and afterward would explore. I just hope the rumors are true that Risa Tabata are true; that she was legit one of the biggest critics of Tanabe's recent decisions and plans to restore both Prime series and Paper Mario series back to their roots.

No, I was referring to Sylux' Shock Coil in the opening cutscene. It's a neutrino beam which if I understood correctly should be 99.99% whatever of the speed of light.

I dunno, I can see how it might appeal to people but I just don't think I'd enjoy it.

That part did seem really bad. Sylux has been built up for two whole decades, it's really underwhelming for him to be... some guy, basically.

The game definitely seemed like it had a hellish development cycle. Retro should still have it in them to make a good MP game, I just hope it goes smoother next time.

The scan for the black hole attack is at 19:02 in this video:

For those who don't want to watch the scan reads as follows:

"Miniature Black Hole generated by Sylux. It draws in firearm attacks, neutralizing them. Only the Control Beam-and the will of its user-can resist the black hole's pull."

Most of what Samus encounters in Prime 4 was pretty tame until Sylux opened dimensional portals causing this game to get very cosmic very fast. Bare minimum the Scan Visor has been right about everything it's ever scanned, including how to neutralize Sylux's black hole attack, so I'd take what the Scan Visor says at face value that this attack is indeed a miniature black hole. What the AP is and how it can be quantified I have no idea though.

Another question, does any of Samus' Prime 4 suits increase her durability at all? I'd assume they don't since the description of each suit doesn't say it increases Samus' defensive shielding, kind of like the PED Suit in Prime 3. Doesn't seem to increase defense outside of Hyper Mode but provides other functions. The Viola Suit lets Samus drive Viola. That's all it does. The Viola IC Suit gives Viola a new "hove bike" mode. The Legacy Suit converts the kinetic energy of 35 Missiles to form the Legacy Barrier. The Legacy Barrier is very strong, being able to disintegrate any enemy it touches including Brute Grievers that can tank a Power Bomb and multiple Super Missiles. Given that the barrier is described to be formed by converting the kinetic energy of 35 Missiles, what are the logistics of how powerful 35 Missiles are? Also, you figure that the Legacy Barrier would be powered by psychic energy in some way but psychic energy isn't mentioned in the Legacy Suit's description. Granted you need to enter the Psychic Visor and hold the Missile button to activate the barrier so it could be a bit of both but the description doesn't say that.

I dunno, it's shooting out the stuff it sucked back in which seems weird for a black hole, it's not really destroying the surroundings... I don't put into question the claim that it's a black hole but that doesn't mean it's behaving realistically as one (and thus can be calced as such). Not the worst depiction I've seen frankly but I'd err on the side of caution.

When evaluating the durability of characters in Metroid, is it more fair to rely on the number of missles (or super missiles) it takes to defeat them or just the fact that they are able to take such weapons?

The latter and context.

Think video game verses get a little scaling crazy when it comes to game mechanics; not everything should scale 100% to the protagonist, especially someone like Samus.
I feel like Metroid is a verse where game mechanic do somewhat apply to lore (to what extent is basically an inherent aspect of scaling video game characters and Metroid is no exception), however I'm thinking of Metroid Prime 3 where Samus needs two Power Beam charge shots to kill a Space Pirate Trooper in gameplay but can kill them with one uncharged shot in cutscenes. Not that Samus casually one shots every boss she fights but the amount of hits bosses and enemies can take has to be way more than what they can withstand in lore if nothing else for gameplay and difficulty level purposes.

I do think most bosses in the series do end up scaling to Samus, she's not the kind of protagonist that no-effort steamrolls most threats and generally it doesn't break the logic of the setting to say a decent amount of creatures are comparable to her, so long as it's not like basic space pirates or whatever

But you'd still end up prioritizing basically anything over gameplay. And enemy health should take less priority than the actual means of combat, a lot of Metroid bosses are invulnerable to attacks and need some kind of strategy to beat them, when it comes to durability (and this is a setting where durability and AP aren't often 1 to 1) that takes more priority
