Melzargard blitzed Sky King via a surprise attack, from a direction that the Sky King wasn't looking at. That's not a great justification.

He was already warned about the threat by his subordinates, who were no more than 5 meters away from him, and turned to face the direction of the threat. The fact that Air King says "he swatted me like a gnat" proves he had a visual of Melzargard, so it couldn't have been a surprise attack (unless we're counting getting blitzed as the surprise).
