The funny thing is that Goku's trust and mercy are what enabled the likes of Piccolo and Vegeta to become some of the most well developed and beloved characters in the franchise.
Majin Vegeta sacrificing himself against Buu, knowing that he'd cease to exist and he reincarnated into a different form, for the sake of others is one of most well written moments in the entire series in my opinion. And all because Goku took a gamble and offered Vegeta mercy all those years ago.
