I have seen this term in all of the durability stats for both Jedi and Sith. Just how does the force enhance durability using the force again?

And why did Jedi and Sith only use such defensive moves against other Force Techniques, and not try to use this to protect themselves from Lightsabers, Blaster Shots and the Death Star?
