I think nuking profiles is bad because someone may come along and wish to have a basis to go off of, generally speaking they could be locked or elected to be put in someone’s sandbox with a note somewhere “these preserved profiles are now here.”

Most of the time, having the old profiles preserved in a sandbox or blog is what happens, unless they're just so bad that they can't even be used as a basis for new profiles.

Haven't seen this suggestion anywhere, but it is actually kinda good, I think. Something like "This profile is out of date. Please refrain from using it in any thread that isn't a Content Revision Thread" or something like that.

You could also add a category to it like “Out of date” so people can better find them

I use a template like this for out of date stuff. Ironically, I haven't touched the profile this is from in a long time.
