Toppo Resistance to Empathic Manipulation

I was just wondering why Toppo has Resistance to Empathic Manipulation despite the fact that he was struggling to stop the affects of Ribrianne's attacks and even telling himself "don't smell it" before jumping away. It doesn't make much sense for him to have this power.
