It is an astronomical method of categorizing the likelihood of a near-earth object(s) colliding with Earth.

0 - Certain of no impact, energy yield is below 1 megaton of TNT.
1 - Very little likelihood of an impact.
2 - Unlikely of an impact.
3 - 1% or higher chance of causing localized destruction.
4 - 1% or higher chance of causing regional destruction.
5 - A close encounter but still uncertain of the impact.
6 - A close encounter but still uncertain of global catastrophe.
7- A very encounter but still uncertain of global catastrophe.
8 - Ceratin of impact, causing localized destruction. The energy yield is 1 - 100 megatons of TNT
9 - Ceratin of impact, causing regional destruction. The energy yield is 100 - 100000 megatons of TNT
10 - Ceratin of impact, causing a climatic catastrophe. The energy yield is >100000 megatons of TNT
