I never watched the Unova series, and don't plan to. Could anybody elaborate on how exactly they were competent during that time? What exactly did they accomplish which was impressive enough to note this on the profile?

They pulled off a series of plans that ended with them taking over the subway to steal a ton of Pokémon. Basically they planed for the long term and though Ash and the gang did get in the way and achieve some small victories they weren't enough to prevent the Trio from achieving the goals they needed for the big one. Think something like how Team Galactic kept getting what they needed for their goals in DP despite Ash's interference. Also Meowth pulled off a several episode plan where he pretended to be part of Ash's gang.

Yeah. Basically, they got ‘serious’ in the Unova region. They actually deceived the gang, they thought ahead and performed complicated maneuvers. They weren’t as silly as normal, even having a wardrobe change to reflect it.

In fact, iirc they almost succeeded in what they were trying to do. But the boss was possessed or something? Idk it’s been a while lol

I think I found what you're talking about. They succeeded in giving Giovanni exactly what he wanted, but he was overcome with evil ambitions because of something relating to the legendary pokemon, so he wanted to destroy Unova instead of control it.

Jessie can be competent sometimes, even before Unova, she was a pretty good coordinator, and managed to get 5 ribbons, and compete in the grand festival

James also managed to get pretty far in the Alola League as well
