Super Mario General Discussion Thread.

Yeah originally the intent was to split most subseries into their own profiles and have their own scaling but given the handful of statements saying it's all the same Mario plus the different series making direct references to one another it was dropped with the exception of the Paper Mario series due to Paper Jam explictly having them take place in their own universe.

tho tbh every subseries genuinely have purposely different power levels, the Mario Bros and Bowser in the RPG games are clearly meant to be stronger than they are in any of the New Soup games given the threats they fight at the end of their games. Hell it even extends to abilities sometimes, Bowser in the M&L games straight up can't turn giant on a whim whereas in the Mario Party games he can grow giant whenever he pleases

This is still cringe to this day but thankfully it would be handled in a future CRT (Don't expect it to be soon tho)

It really depends on the story, new soup has practically no story at all, because Nintendo still seems stuck in a stone age mentality about narrative. As for Bowser, Mario has never been consistent in how it portrays powers even within the same subseries. Mario doesn’t carry over Firebrand in later Mario & Luigi games (which weird because Mario and Luigi can use fire and thunder powers in sports), nor does the dimensional flip return in later Paper Mario entries. Peach can beat the crap out of Bowser in one game, then be terrified of him in another. Even the cast suddenly gaining psychic powers in Mario Party shows how inconsistent things get. At the end of the day, the writers clearly treat Mario as a cartoony series where things just happen for the sake of the plot/gameplay. Honestly, sometimes I doubt they even care much about lore at all. And I'm sure Bananza made this clear.

Finally some in-depth DiC research. (not just Super Show, paisanos. But also World, and most particularly my childhood show, SMB3)

We do have a very old thread for that, but it's about time we'll go on.

DICK canon?

tfw Bowser blows up and is reduced to smoke only to reappear perfectly intact during the credits in 3D World, but him coming back happens off screen and even then Mid-High regen would be an outlier for him anyway

Star Road seems to brighten all the stars in the night sky when it's put back together in the SMRPG remake (Granted it might be the visuals of it summoning rainbow light to thanos snap exor just making everything in the background seem brighter than they actually are), which is cool, shame it doesn't scale to anyone.

Also damn can't believe Super Mario Bros. turns 40 this saturday, crazy how it's now as old as the UN was when the game first game out for the famicom. I have to imagine they've got a direct planned for it like with the 35th anniversary, maybe something really cool like Super Mario 40 (That have it's servers taken down after a few months because "it has to be unique for the celebration" or whatever). I'm still holding out for Mario Maker 3 simply because my lil' cousin adores the other 2 games and I need something to get her for christmas or her birthday that someone else already hasn't brought.

That Cranky Kong CRT is never gonna get finished I asked mods days ago if they could comment and still nothing, they should be bowing to me and following my every order this is unacceptable

Another neat thing I've found while digging around for Bowser stuff, his resistance to mind control from lucien also doubles as a willpower feat since aster states that anyone with a strong enough will has nothing to fear from his powers. This should also applies to Mario, Peach, and Daisy since they're the ones he was reassuring to not fear Luciens powers specifically. Last I checked being able to resist mind control through willpower grants supernatual willpower right?

There aren't specifically rules for what does and doesn't give you SW but that'd make sense yeah

Oh boy, new movie is the "main event" of the 40th Anniversary.
Mario Galaxy new pages in its books, but they won't be in the physical edition???
Also, everyone ready for the galaxy arguments to re-surge?
Mario Tennis has some hax & "Fever Rackets" & a story mode where the cast turn into Babies. (Including some characters who haven't been seen as such before.) Reminds me of the Olympics games with their story modes, which we haven't had in a while.
Yoshi & the Mysterious Book. Between Rosalina's book & this, what is with Mario & books today? Ah well. Reading is good. In-universe lorebook with stuff & info for each thing in it is hype.
Oh boy, potential Reality>Fiction differences for Yoshi?
It could just be a portal, of course; IIRC, Mr. E does get called an encyclopedia. (Also, are there not other Mario characters with those names so far?)
Oh, & new Mario Wonder content with Bellabel Park. Minigames might have some stuff, plus looks like the Koopalings might be showing up?

Oh, & Donkey Kong Bananza gets Kong Island with Emerald Rush paid DLC, but so far, we've only seen the Emerald Rush stuff, seems like. Diddy Kong & Dixie Kong are there, but unsure if the others aren't... off adventuring somewhere else. Uncertain there's even a story mode for it beyond agreeing to collect emeralds for Void Kong.

The book is what interests me, whether they're portals or universes is something to think about, 2-C book guy here we come

(BTW Imaginym, can you please check the Breaking Bond thread?)

Mid asf direct and that 20 minute mario section wasnt even really impressive. I tapped out 5 minutes after the mario section was over.

Yeah, even within the Mario content, not that many high points.
Also, Bananza's DLC has me apprehensive, because so far, they haven't shown any reoccurring DKC country characters other than those already in the base game.
Were there issues with putting in Funky, Kiddy, Lanky, Tiny or Chunky Kong? Also, if this is a prequel, that'd be an opportunity to put in Wrinkly Kong, AKA Cranky's wife, since she should still be around at such time.

I know why chunky isn't there

what do you want them to do, add his casket?

Joking aside, I would say neglected by the franchise.
Unlike Wrinkly, where we saw her as a ghost in at least 2 games, we lack evidence of whatever Chunky's case may be, alive or otherwise.
With the DLC heavily featuring DK Isle, where Donkey Kong 64 takes place, the location of the game where Chunky Kong became playable (& debuted, too, I think?), I'd like at least a dialogue mention of "Oh he's off adventuring." or "Chunky's performing in the big city & chasing his dreams now!" or something like that, if not a visual appearance/cameo.

I like to imagine that he got kidnapped by the Kremlings due to Dixie and Kiddy failing that one minigame in DKC3 (GBA version) where they gotta save him from drowning before some Kremlings get to him. And maybe he starved to death in a dungeon or something I dunno.

What did Chunky do that would deserve such a fate?

700 green bananas.
What about the other kongs of DK64 & their needs for many hundreds of specifically coloured bananas?
Let's just say King K. Rool isn't the only character in the DK franchise to commit acts of terrorism...
I mean, I guess he did go into several lands occupied by other groups & fight or attack several beings found there, though many were armed or hostile to begin with, even if he used lethal force. Not to mention, many were likely quite separated from DK Isle.
But the same case applies to the other DK64 Kongs, no?

....I wonder if there's a Youtube video or something on this topic.

When was the last time you seen Lanky either?
That is an interesting question.

Mario Wiki says:

Club Nintendo
Lanky Kong makes a minor appearance in the Club Nintendo N-Gang comic series in N-Gang vs. Nintendo, where he teams up with Banjo, Kazooie, Wario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong in a soccer match against the N-Gang.

More credibly canon (Or less noncanonical.) appearances seem to be:

Donkey Kong Country 3 (Game Boy Advance)
In the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3, Lanky makes a cameo in one of the Funky's Rentals challenges. He appears during "Challenge 3: Protect", where Dixie and Kiddy Kong's objective is to protect him and the other Kongs from being kidnapped by Kremlings riding speedboats.

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast
Lanky Kong returns as a racer in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. In this game he is an unlockable character, unlocked by winning the Topaz Cup as a Kong character. In the game, he is considerably powerful, and is the rival of Klump. He has high speed, below average boost and poor agility. He attacks by clapping his hands in front of him. As with all playable characters, he has the ability of doing Wild Moves.

In the Single Race cutscene, he can be seen alongside Donkey, Tiny, and Dixie standing in front of their rivals, Klump, Kritter, Kalypso, and Kass. He can also be seen in the Time Trial cutscene racing with Kass, as Kopter counts their lap time with a stopwatch, Diddy Kong cheering for them and Kalypso showing them a sign to tell them which lap they are on. His bongos are blue with white parts, which resemble the colors of his clothes. This game marks his debut in spin-off games and his last physical appearance.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Although Lanky Kong does not physically appear in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, he is mentioned on page 18 in the digital manual, where his name, along with Candy and Tiny Kong's, appears on a mock Time Attack leaderboard. Lanky is placed seventh, beneath Candy and above Tiny.

Donkey Kong Bananza
While Lanky Kong himself does not physically appear in Donkey Kong Bananza, he appears on a billboard in New Donk City.

So yeah. The high score table could just be someone paying homage to him, & the billboards in New Donk City could just be using old images of him, & maybe some would debate DKC3 on the GBA being canon, but when considering Barrel Blast, he's definitely alive, last we saw him, unlike Wrinkly, who's still a ghost in that.
