Question about the Replacement Jutsu aka Substitution Jutsu in Naruto.

Okay so I have seen this pop up time to time in various vs threads with Naruto characters, Some people tend to view it as actual teleportation, and as such can be used to avoid certain techniques like specific kids of BFR or attacks. In many cases threads have gone on far longer just cause of this supposed inconsistent property of the Jutsu.

So what is this jutsu and how does it work? I myself think its just really fast movement which is why later on in the series we see it used less and less cause everyone is pretty much at speeds where the technique is practically useless.

"With this technique, users replace their own body with some other object, generally with a block of wood, the moment an attack lands. This creates an optical illusion, making the enemy think the attack was successful. "

the wording makes it seem like teleportation. also if it was fast movement slower characters would likely be unable to use it.

I'd agree but it being a very basic technique that beginner genin learn in the academy seems really....odd. I mean if its a teleport then why is the Flying Thunder God made by Minato so damn special then?
